CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Ohio Valley Conference-leading Southeast Missouri women's volleyball team (19-8, 11-2 OVC) overcame Austin Peay (9-18, 7-6 OVC) in five sets (25-21, 25-23, 19-25, 17-25, 15-12) Thursday evening at Houck Field House to extend its win streak to seven matches.
The victory also completed the regular-season sweep of Austin Peay. Southeast last beat the Governors twice in the regular season in 2011.
Maggie Adams paced the Redhawks with a career-best 16-kill outing on a .355 hitting clip while
Laney Malloy notched a double-double of 13 kills and 18 digs.
Mikayla Kuhlmann chipped in 12 kills (.243) while
Krista Berns had seven and
Annie Wehrheim finished with six.
Claire Ochs handed out 47 assists with 12 digs for the double-double performance.
Southeast captured the first two sets (25-21, 25-23) to open the match before Austin Peay responded with a pair of set wins of their own to force a decisive fifth set. The Redhawks hit a match-high .400 in the first set before notching a .321 in the fifth with their backs against the wall.
Knotted at 2-2, SEMO and Austin Peay traded the lead early with a kill from Brooke Moore tying the frame at 5-5.
A pair of Redhawk block assists then pulled the set in favor of Southeast, 8-5.
Kuhlmann and Adams registered kills to bookend a service ace from Berns to push the advantage to 11-6.
Ochs added a kill to make the score, 12-7.
Jenna Panning then recorded a kill to cut the lead to 12-9 and bring on a Southeast timeout.
Out of the break, Kuhlmann and Malloy each slammed kills to bring on match-point, 14-9, and prompt Austin Peay's second timeout.
The Governors came as close as 14-12 after a pair of kills from Panning and Moore combined with a SEMO attack error.
Malloy then clinched the victory with a kill to conclude the match.
Southeast out blocked APSU, 16-9, with its second-highest block total in 2019. Adams, the two-time OVC Defensive Player of the Week in 2019, and Berns each tallied seven and Kuhlmann added six while Ochs had five.
The Redhawks also won the serving battle with 11 aces compared to the Governors four. Ochs and
Emily Boggetto each had three. Berns and
Tara Beilsmith chipped in two apiece and
Ally Dion had one.
Beilsmith led the defense with 24 digs. Dion finished with seven and Boggetto posted five.
Moore had a match-high 18 kills and Tegan Seyring totaled 17 kills. Ginny Gerig had 36 digs.
Caroline Waite tallied 34 assists for APSU and Kelsey Mead added 29.
Southeast wraps up its regular-season home schedule Friday when they welcome Murray State (15-9, 9-3 OVC) to Houck Field House. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m., CT. The Redhawks will recognize the careers of seniors
