Redhawks Set for 2019 OVC Cross Country Championship Saturday in Edwardsville, Illinois

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri cross country will travel to Edwardsville, Illinois, for the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Cross Country Championship Saturday at the SIUE Cross Country Course. The men will run an 8K at 9 a.m. followed by the women's 5K set for 10 a.m.
Saturday marks the first time that SIUE will serve as host for the conference meet.
The Southeast women placed second overall at the 2018 OVC Cross Country Championship held in Cape Girardeau. SEMO has finished runners-up at the league meet 10 times. Under the guidance of head coach Ryan Lane, the team has finished in the top four each of the past six seasons.
Kaitlyn Shea (17:36.7, seventh), Sydney O'Brien (17:36.9, eighth, PR) and Carli Knott each garnered All-OVC honors with top-10 finishes in 2018.
For Shea, it was her third career All-OVC Cross Country team (2018 All-OVC First Team, 2016 and 2017 All-OVC Second Team) after being named OVC Freshman of the Year in 2015.
Southeast last had three All-OVC women runners in 2008 when Juli Koenegstein, Monica Noble and Linnea Woldtvedt recorded the feat.
Knott completed the 5K in 17:56.3 for 10th at the 2018 Championship. Rachel Hutchcraft (18:24.6, 20th) and Natalie Kopplin (18:59.9, 36th) rounded out the Redhawks top five.
The SEMO men finished eighth in the 8K at the 2018 Championship and were led by Dan Plunkett (25:47.2, 33rd overall).
Curtis Reed was second on the Redhawks, clocking in at 26:16.0 (42nd). Chris Durr (26:28.9, 50th), James Kosbar (26:29.5, 51st) and Griffin Bailey (65th, 27:19.7) also scored for the Southeast men.
The Redhawk men have finished second four times at the conference meet including most recently in 2010.
Southeast enters the Championship after competing in four regular season races in both Illinois and Missouri in 2019.
The SEMO women placed first at the Saluki Invite and second out of a field of 20 teams at the Bradley Intercollegiate to start the season.
Knott and Maddie Keller have been the top-two finishers for the Redhawks at each of the four races. The duo was third and fourth at the season-opening Saluki Invite before taking second and third at the Bradley Intercollegiate.
Knott and Keller also placed in the top-15 at Missouri's Gans Creek Classic and in the top-20 at the Bradley 'Pink' Classic. Knott posted the third-best 6K time (21:25.6, 11th, PR) in the OVC at the Bradley Pink Classic and was recognized as OVC Female Co-Runner of the Week after her Bradley Intercollegiate performance.
Freshman Hannah Eastman has been the third fastest finisher for the women in all four races. Katie Wegmann (3), Danielle Mohrmann (3), Mackenzie Pugh (1) and Claire Morrill (1) have also rounded out the top-five Redhawk scorers.
Durr has led the men in all four meets this season. He paced the team with a career-best 5K time (16:19.93) for third overall at the Saluki Invite and placed in the top-25 at the Bradley Intercollegiate.
Southeast has relied on its youth to complete their top-five scorers. Freshmen Aaron Modrow, Caleb Cornelius, Terrico Garrett and Kory Snyder have all been scorers in their inaugural collegiate campaigns.
Juniors Austin Perkins and Trevor Falco have also scored for the SEMO men in 2019.
After the 2019 OVC Cross Country Championship, Southeast will head to Stillwater, Oklahoma, for the 2019 NCAA Midwest Regional held on the campus of Oklahoma State on Nov. 15.
