CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's (14-8, 6-2 OVC) registered its second sweep of the weekend with a 25-22, 25-12, 25-13, victory over Eastern Kentucky (7-15, 2-6 OVC) Saturday afternoon at Houck Field House.
The win marked the first time Southeast had beat EKU in Cape Girardeau since Oct. 9, 2015 (3-1).
The Redhawks have now posted eight sweeps in 2019 including four in Ohio Valley Conference play.
"We did a great job executing our offense again today," head coach
Julie Yankus said after the match. "When we can get all five of our attackers involved like we did today, we are hard to defend. I give a ton of credit to our passers for getting us in system and to Claire [Ochs] for making smart decisions and distributing the ball in an efficient manner. It was another true team effort today."
Krista Berns paced the offense with nine kills (.467) and a service ace.
Maggie Adams (.667) and
Laney Malloy each had eight rally stoppers.
Annie Wehrheim added seven (.333) and
Mikayla Kuhlmann had six (.313).
Claire Ochs passed out 34 assists with eight digs and three service aces as the Redhawks hit a season-best .360 percentage.
SEMO opened the match with a .293 clip to claim the first set, 25-22. Berns knocked six of her nine kills in the frame.
The Redhawks took an early 10-9 lead after consecutive attack errors by the Colonels.
The first set featured nine ties and seven lead changes in the highly contested frame.
After tie score lines of 10-10, 12-12, 13-13, 14-14 and 15-15, Southeast distanced themselves from EKU with a 5-0 run, 21-19. Adams connected with a pair of kills during the rally and combined with Wehrheim for a block.
Wehrheim added a kill for a slight 22-20 SEMO advantage.
Malloy and Berns then chipped in two straight rally stoppers to take the set, 25-22.
The Redhawks utilized a 6-0 run to pull ahead 17-8 in the second set. Kuhlmann notched two kills in the rally and Ochs tallied three services aces.
Kuhlmann added another kill before SEMO pushed the advantage to 22-10 after four straight points.
Ochs called her own number with a kill from Malloy before a pair of bad sets concluded the frame, 25-12.
Malloy and Adams each had four kills in the second set as the Redhawks had a .345 hitting percentage.
Southeast continued to improve its hitting efficiency into the final set where they posted a match-high .467.
EKU took a 4-1 early lead in the set before SEMO took an 11-8 advantage after four straight points.
Abby Noll hit a kill before a 9-0 Redhawks run grew the lead to 20-9.
Adams, Wehrheim (3) and Berns each had kills in the rally.
Tara Beilsmith also notched all three of her service aces during the run.
Malloy then knocked back-to-back kills before
Elissa Moylan blasted a rally stopper to make the advantage, 23-11.
Eastern Kentucky came as close as 23-13 after kills from Jovana Bulatovic and Adria Hartley.
Moylan then hit her second kill of the match and Kuhlmann clinched the set with a rally stopper, 25-13.
Beilsmith led the defense with 19 digs.
Ally Dion, the Southeast all-time career service aces leader (25-point rally scoring era from 2008 to present), had seven while Malloy chipped in six.
Southeast had nine service aces compared to EKU's two.
SEMO also out blocked the Colonels, 5-2, as Wehrheim, Adams and Kuhlmann each had three.
Noll posted a match-high 11 kills for Eastern Kentucky and Dena Tekavec had 14 digs defensively.
The Redhawks concluded their four-match homestand with a 3-1 mark as all three victories came on 3-0 sweeps. In its last 10 matches, Southeast is 8-2 with five sweeps.
SEMO next hits the road for three away conference matches. The Redhawks venture to the Music City to face Tennessee State and Belmont on Friday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. in Nashville, Tennessee. Southeast then makes the short trip to UT Martin for the second-meeting of the season with the Skyhawks on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. in Martin, Tennessee.
