MOREHEAD, Ky.– Morehead State (6-12, 2-3) wiped out a 14-point second-half deficit to pull out a 73-69 win over Southeast Missouri (6-12, 1-4) Thursday night at Johnson Arena.
SEMO led 52-38 with 11:26 remaining and was ahead by 11 with a little over seven minutes left when MSU mounted its comeback. The Redhawks had a 14-point lead twice and was up 58-47 following
Mark Laros' jumper with 7:21 remaining.
Then, MSU answered with a 14-0 run which started with a pair of free throws by De'von Cooper. A dunk by James Baker in transition, four-point play by Jordan Walker and back-to-back 3-pointers by Lamontray Harris came after that as the Eagles took a 61-58 lead with 4:31 on the clock.
Two minutes and 20 seconds later, the game was deadlocked at 67-67 when MSU scored four of its final six points at the free throw line to escape.
MSU opened with an 11-2 run in the first 4:51 of the contest.
SEMO answered by scoring nine of the next 11 points and pulled to within two (13-11) when
Jonathan Dalton drove in for a layup with 10:42 to go.
After A.J. Hicks' jumper put the Eagles ahead, 20-12, the Redhawks countered with seven-straight points to slice MSU's lead to 20-19.
Skyler Hogan scored the last four points of the surge.
SEMO was within a point once more before Hogan gave the the Redhawks a 26-25 edge when he drove the land for a nice left-handed layup with a little over two minutes left. SEMO hadn't led for two games until Hogan's basket.
Jordan Walker drained a 3-pointer following a
Nygal Russell layup to grab MSU a 30-28 advantage at the half.
SEMO stormed out to a 16-2 run to build a 12-point lead over the first six minutes of the second half. The Redhawks heated up to make six of their first nine field goals and added four free throws during that stretch. Hogan's 3-pointer got SEMO a 44-32 lead with just under 14 minutes to go.
Isaiah Gable scored 20 points to lead three Redhawks with double figures in the scoring column. Gable shot 8-of-14 from the floor and made a game-high four 3-pointers. It was his fourth double-digit scoring effort in five starts and second 20-point performance this season.
Hogan added 14 points, while Laros chipped in 12 points and six rebounds off the bench.
SEMO shot 53.1 percent (17-of-32) from the field in the second half. The Redhawks scored 36 points in the paint and 14 second chance points, as well. Additionally, SEMO was whistled for 27 fouls, 14 more than MSU.
Harris, despite being ejected late in the game for two technical fouls, led MSU with 19 points. Cooper (16), Baker (11) and Walker (10) also scored double figures, while Hicks finished with nine points and 11 assists.
The Eagles outscored the Redhawks, 14-5, at the free throw line and made 12 of their free throws in the second half.
SEMO stays on the road to face Eastern Kentucky Saturday.
