KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's volleyball (6-3) forced a fifth set tiebreak with Arkansas State (3-5) but could not finish the comeback as they fell 2-3 (15-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 12-15) Friday afternoon at the Swinney Recreation Center.

Laney Malloy and
Claire Ochs each recorded double-doubles in Southeast's first match at the Kangaroo Classic hosted by Missouri-Kansas City. Malloy led the team with personal bests in kills (17) and digs (16) for her second career double-double. Ochs tallied her third career double-double with a career best 52 assists and 15 digs.

Annie Wehrheim entered the match in the second set and posted a career-high outing of 12 kills on a .455 hitting percentage with three blocks and a dig.

The Red Wolves took the opening set, 25-15, before SEMO evened the match at one game apiece with a 25-21 second set.

With the second set knotted at 10-10, Southeast went on a 4-0 run with two kills from
Maggie Adams and a kill from Wehrheim to take a 14-10 lead. A Wehrheim kill and then an Ochs rally stopper extended the advantage to 20-15.

A 4-1 rally from the Red Wolves cut the lead to 21-19 before a kill by Carlisa May made the score 23-21 and brought a Redhawks timeout.

Out of the break,
Madara Bajare smashed a kill followed by a block assist from Wehrheim and Adams to tie the match at 1-1.

In the third set, trailing 10-7 Southeast pulled ahead 12-10 with a 4-0 run with two kills from Bajare plus a kill and a service ace from
Krista Berns. ASU would tie the set at 15-15 with a kill from May to prompt a SEMO timeout.

Three straight points for the Red Wolves brought ASU's lead to 21-19 before Southeast knotted the set back up at 21-21. Arkansas State then closed out the set with four unanswered points.

The third set featured 14 ties and 10 lead changes.

Down 2-1 in the match, Southeast utilized runs of 6-0 and 5-0 in the fourth set to tie the match back up and force a fifth set tiebreaker.
SEMO had a match high hitting percentage of .324 in the fourth set.

Early in the set, six straight Redhawk kills from Malloy,
Ally Dion (2), Berns and Wehrheim (2) gave SEMO an 8-3 edge. The Red Wolves answered back to tie the set at 11-11 before another rally from Southeast. Kills from
Kendall Washington and Ochs extended the lead to 15-11 and a Malloy kill after an ASU timeout made the score 16-11.

Arkansas State would storm back with a 4-1 run before another Wehrheim rally stopper brought the score to 20-18. Adams then sealed the set with a kill after the Red Wolves came within two points.

In the fifth and final set, ASU started with a 5-3 lead before a 4-0 run from Southeast brought the score to SEMO's favor, 7-5. A Wehrheim kill grew the lead to 9-7 before ties of 9-9 and 10-10.

Washington added a rally stopper and Adams made a solo block to make the score 12-10 before five straight points from the Red Wolves captured the match.

Bajare finished the match with 10 kills and Adams chipped in a career best of eight on a .471 hitting clip.

Defensively, Dion tied with Malloy for the team lead with 16 digs.

Southeast closes out the Kangaroo Classic Saturday with back-to-back matches. The Redhawks face Providence at 10 a.m. followed by a match with tournament host, UMKC, at 12:30 p.m.
