Southeast Drops 3-1 Decision to Northwestern State Saturday

JACKSON, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's volleyball (5-2) concluded its 2018 Redhawks Invitational with a 3-1 (17-25, 26-24, 23-25, 14-25) loss to tournament champion, Northwestern State (4-2), Saturday afternoon at Saxony Lutheran High School.
 
Laney Malloy led Southeast with 15 kills and freshman Kendall Washington added a career best nine kills.
 
Malloy chipped in 12 digs to complement her 15 kills for her first career double-double performance at Southeast.
 
Defensively, Ally Dion tallied her first 20 plus dig performance of 2018 with a season best mark of 21.

Claire Ochs dished out 28 assists in the match with NSU and finished the tournament with 91 total assists with 26 digs and 10 kills to earn Redhawks Invitational All-Tournament honors. 
 
After dropping the first set to the Demons, 25-17, SEMO evened the match at 1-1 with a 26-24 second set victory.
 
In a back and forth set, the Redhawks and NSU exchanged leads and ties until the Demons pulled ahead 15-11 courtesy of a Reagan Rogers kill which prompted a SEMO timeout.
 
Out of the break, Krista Berns notched a kill and then Malloy added a rally ender of her own to make the score 13-17. Trailing 20-15, Southeast rallied off three straight points on kills from Washington and Malloy along with a block assist from Haley Bilbruck and Maggie Adams to cut the lead to 20-18.
 
The Demons added another point to their advantage before SEMO went on a 4-0 run to take the lead 22-21 and force a NSU timeout.
 
Bilbruck recorded a kill to bring the score to 23-22 Southeast before a Redhawks error tied the set back up at 24-24. SEMO then claimed the second set on a Washington kill and a Demons attack error.
 
Southeast outhit NSU, .277 to .231 in the second set.
 
In the third set, SEMO grew its lead to 10-7 after back-to-back service aces from Emily Boggetto. Kills from Washington and Claire Ochs extended the margin to 14-9 before Northwestern State evened the set at 15-15 with four consecutive points.
 
Southeast reclaimed the lead, 22-20, on another winner from Ochs before NSU answered with a 4-0 run to take the set, 25-23.
 
The Demons captured the match and the tournament with a 25-14 fourth set.
 
Madeline Grimm recorded a season best 12 digs.
 
Elissa Moylan made her Redhawks debut against NSU and served twice in the fourth set.
 
Northwestern State won the 2018 Redhawks Invitational with a perfect 3-0 record. Rogers was named the Redhawks Invitational MVP. Madeline Drake and Channing Burleson both earned spots on the all-tournament team.
 
Radford was second at the invite with a 2-1 mark. SEMO was third and Louisiana Monroe finished fourth.
 
Southeast is back in action on Tuesday against regional rival Southern Illinois at 6:30 p.m. at Houck Field House. Tuesday night's match is Houck "FILLED" House presented by Jimmy John's. Help us break the Houck Field House attendance record of 1,206 set in 2014. The first 800 fans to enter the arena will receive Houck "FILLED" House, Fortnite t-shirts courtesy of Jimmy John's.
