SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's tennis (2-3, 0-0 OVC) won three singles matches Friday night at the Cooper Tennis Complex but fell to in-state rival, Missouri State (3-1, 0-0 MVC), 4-3.
 
"We had a tough match tonight," head coach Mary Beth Gunn said. "It was difficult with Isabella Krupa being out at no. 2 singles and everyone moving up a position, but the women played hard and gave it all on the court."
 
The Bears took the doubles point with three straight wins to open the dual. With the absence of Krupa, Oleksandra Doroshenko and Alessandra Maya Thompson moved up to the top doubles spot for the first time in 2018 but dropped a 6-4 decision to Alye Darter and Ellie Burger.
 
Kseniya Zonova who paired with Krupa the past four meets at the no. 1 doubles position, teamed up with freshman Kelly Sicha at the no. 2 slot. Anelisse Torrico Moreno and Phoebe Boeschen beat Zonova and Sicha, 6-2, to start the meet.
 
Anais Emelie and Maja Lundell lost a close match to Fati Khamissi and Taylor Gray, 6-4, in the final doubles position.
 
Doroshenko then tied the dual at 1-1 when she defeated Darter in no. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1. Sicha recorded her first career singles win as a Redhawk at no. 6 singles to knot the meet at 2-2. She breezed by Abbey Belote, 6-3, 6-0.
 
Zonova also earned her first career victory at the second singles position, when she beat Torrico Moreno, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3, in the second to last singles contest of the evening.
 
In the final singles match of the night, Emelie jumped out to a 1-0 lead against Boeschen after she won the opening set, 7-5. Boeschen evened the match at 1-1 with a 6-4 second set win and then outlasted Emelie in the final set, 7-5, to claim the meet for MSU.
 
Maya Thompson fought tough in the fifth singles position but fell to Burger, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
 
The Redhawks conclude the weekend with a dual at Arkansas of the SEC tomorrow at 2 p.m. at George M. Billingsley Tennis Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas
