JONESBORO, Ark. – Southeast Missouri women's tennis (3-5, 0-0 OVC) fell to Arkansas State (2-7, 0-0 Sun Belt), 4-3, Saturday at the Jonesboro Country Club.
 
After the Red Wolves took the doubles point with two wins, Southeast rallied off three singles victories but it wasn't enough as ASU also won three singles matches.  
 
Kirsty Venter and Sabina Jeresic beat Anais Emelie and Maja Lundell, 6-1, and then Shelby King and Shannon O'Brien defeated Oleksandra Doroshenko and Alessandra Maya Thompson, 6-2, to earn the doubles point for ASU.
 
Doroshenko then tied the dual at 1-1 when the meet switched to the singles competition. She earned her second straight singles victory at no. 1 singles with a 7-5, 6-0 win over King.
 
The Redhawks took a 2-1 edge in the meet when Zonova beat Anita Detlava, 6-1, 6-4, in no. 2 singles. Jeresic then outlasted Maya Thompson, 7-6 (8), 6-3, to even the dual at 2-2 at the third singles position.
 
Emelie snapped a four-match losing streak when she overcame Berta Masdevall Masip, 6-3, 7-5. The win was Emelie's first in 2018 at fourth singles and put the Redhawks on top at the meet, 3-2.
 
Lundell and Sicha then lost their sixth and fifth singles matches to give Arkansas State the meet victory. Sicha dropped the first set to O'Brien, 6-0, but knotted the match at 1-1 when she took the second set, 6-4. O'Brien then captured the third set, 7-5, to win the fifth singles match and earn the dual victory for ASU.
 
Southeast is back in competition on Monday, March 12 at 2 p.m. against Maryville in SEMO's home opener at the Redhawks Tennis Complex in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
