ITTA BENA, Miss. –
Skyler Hogan scored a career-high 25 points to lead Southeast Missouri (5-4) to a 77-57 win over Mississippi Valley State (2-8) Tuesday night at the Harrison HPER Complex.
Hogan led three SEMO players in double figures as the Redhawks picked up their first true road win of the season.
A native of Melbourne, Florida, Hogan shot 10-of-16 from the field with five of his makes coming from 3-point range. He also dished out four assists, grabbed two rebounds, gathered two blocks and had a steal in his sixth double-digit scoring game this year.
"That's what we saw when we recruited Skyler," said SEMO head coach
Rick Ray. "He is a guy that can knock down shots for us and is strong and physical."
After closing out the first half with a 7-0 run to take a 33-25 halftime lead after MVSU pulled within a point, the Redhawks poured it on in the game's final 20 minutes.
Isaiah Gable buried a 3-pointer, his third of the first half, and
Gabe McGlothan scored back-to-back layups to help get SEMO its halftime advantage. McGlothan stole Jordan Evans' pass and broke away for an easy layup just before the half ended.
MVSU managed to get within five points twice in the second stanza, but that was as close as it would get. SEMO led by double figures for the final 9:40 of the contest and blew the game open when it went on a 10-3 run to widen its lead to 70-50 at the 3:37 mark. McGlothan rebounded
Ledarrius Brewer's missed 3-pointer and threw down a dunk to cap the surge.
Khalil Cuffee's four points in eight seconds led to SEMO's largest lead of the night at 77-54 with under a minute left.
Gable and McGlothan joined Hogan with double figures in the scoring column. Both scored 11 points with McGlothan adding eight rebounds and a game-high four blocks in a narrow miss of a double-double.
Sage Tolbert led the Redhawks with 11 rebounds, his third double-digit rebound game in five starts.
SEMO shot 43.3 percent (29-of-67) from the field with a 50 percent (16-of-32) clip in the second half. The Redhawks buried 12 three-pointers, as well.
Defensively, the Redhawks had a season-high nine blocks. The last time SEMO had nine blocks in a game was at UT Martin on Feb. 16, 2013.
Dante Scott led MVSU with 19 points. The Delta Devils shot just 31 percent (18-of-58) against the Redhawks strong defense. MVSU attempted 34 free throws and missed 15 of those tries. Additionally, the Delta Devils shot only 13.3 percent (2-of-15) from beyond the arc.
SEMO will return to action when it hosts longstanding rival Southern Illinois on Dec. 8. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m., CT, at the Show Me Center.
