OVC Game of the Week
Saturday's game between Southeast Missouri and Murray State has been selected as a "Wildcard Selection" in the Ohio Valley Conference's Game of the Week football package on ESPN3. When the league's eight-contest Game of the Week schedule was announced in August, the Oct. 27, Nov. 3, Nov. 10 and Nov. 17 games were deemed "Wildcard" dates where the matchup would not be announced until roughly two weeks prior to the contest. This marks the sixth-straight season the league has produced the Game of the Week package in conjunction with Tupelo Raycom (formerly WebStream Sports). With offices in New York, Indianapolis, Charlotte, Nashville and Los Angeles the company develops new programming and delivers live events, music specials and branded features for broadcast, digital and in-venue entertainment. ESPN3 is ESPN's live multi-screen sports network, a destination that delivers thousands of exclusive sports events annually. It is accessible on computers, smartphones, tablets and connected devices through the ESPN App. The network is currently available nationwide at no additional cost to fans who receive their high-speed Internet connection or video subscription from an affiliated service provider. It is also available at no cost to U.S. college students and U.S.-based military personnel via computers, smartphones and tablets connected to on-campus educational and on-base military broadband and Wi-Fi networks.
Series History
This year marks the 53rd meeting between Southeast Missouri and Murray State, schools that are separated just two hours apart. MSU leads the all-time series, 39-12-1. SEMO has won three in a row and four of the last five matchups in the series. Five of the last seven games between these teams have been decided by seven points or less, including a pair of multi-overtime games. The Redhawks are 4-21 all-time at Stewart Stadium, last winning there on Sept. 24, 2016 (17-16).
OVC Title Picture
Southeast Missouri (5-1) and Jacksonville State (6-1) are locked up in a tie for first atop the Ohio Valley Conference standings. If SEMO beats the Racers Saturday and defeats Eastern Illinois at home on Nov. 17, it will clinch the league's automatic berth in this year's 24-team NCAA Division I Football Championship field. If JSU also wins out, the Redhawks and Gamecocks will share the OVC regular-season title. Ten teams are awarded automatic berths and 14 teams go as at-large selections to complete the playoff bracket.
Approaching 1,000
Kristian Wilkerson is approaching 1,000 receiving yards this season. Wilkerson leads Southeast Missouri with 737 yards and 11 touchdowns through nine starts. He needs 263 more yards to hit that mark. Wilkerson's 11 receiving touchdowns are the most in a season by a SEMO receiver since Willie Ponder had 15 in 2002. Ponder was also the last receiver to get 1,000 yards in a season when he finished with 1,453 that year.
Undefeated at Home
Southeast Missouri is a perfect 4-0 at Houck Field this season. SEMO is one of three teams in the Ohio Valley Conference undefeated at home in 2018. The others are Jacksonville State (5-0) and Tennessee State (2-0). The Redhawks have one more home game against Eastern Illinois on Nov. 17. SEMO last finished a season undefeated at home in 2010 (5-0).
Redhawks Move Up in Polls
The Redhawks were ranked 19th in the American Football Coaches Association Football Championship Subdivision Coaches' Poll and 21st in the STATS FCS Media Poll on Nov. 5. SEMO, which is 7-2 overall and tied for first in the Ohio Valley Conference at 5-1, enters the week on a five-game winning streak. The Redhawks are 7-1 against FCS opponents this year. SEMO is ranked in the Top-25 for the second time under head coach Tom Matukewicz and first in both FCS Polls with Matukewicz at the helm. SEMO is in the Top 25 for the second-straight week. The Redhawks are in the Top 20 for the first time since finishing the 2010 season at #13 in both the FCS Coaches and Media Polls. The Redhawks and #10 Jacksonville State represent the Ohio Valley Conference in this week's polls.
Santacaterina and Terry Take OVCÂ Weekly Honors
Southeast Missouri quarterback Daniel Santacaterina and running back Marquis Terry earned Ohio Valley Conference honors on Nov. 4. Santacaterina won his third OVC Newcomer of the Week award and Terry secured his second Offensive Player of the Week accolade this season. Santacaterina, a transfer from Northern Illinois, matched a season-high four touchdown passes as SEMO topped Tennessee State to improve to 7-2 and remain in a tie for first-place in the OVC. The junior completed 22-of-36 passes for 306 yards (and went a third-straight game without an interception) and rushed eight times for 27 net yards. Santacaterina has now thrown for 300 or more yards in four of his last five starts. For the second week in a row, he threw a trio of touchdown passes to Kristian Wilkerson, connecting on throws of 37, 16 and 9 yards. Santacaterina also tossed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Terry. He enters the week ranked fifth nationally in passing touchdowns (23), eighth in passing efficiency (156.6), 14th in passing yards (2,231) and points responsible for/game (16.0), 19th in passing yards/completion (14.03) and 21st in passing yards/game (247.9). Terry accounted for 183 all-purpose yards and a pair of touchdowns against the Tigers. He carried the ball 21 times for 107 yards (5.1 ypc) and a touchdown, and caught a career-high six passes for 76 yards, including an eight-yard touchdown. In the process, Terry went over the 1,000-yard rushing mark this season (one of just seven FCS players to reach that mark this season) and the 2000-yard rushing plateau for his career (ranking eighth in school history in just two years). Terry, who had his third straight 100-yard rushing game, scored on a 37-yard run in the second quarter. A candidate for the Walter Payton Award, Terry ranks sixth nationally in all-purpose yards (157.0/game), seventh in rushing yards (1,021), ninth in total touchdowns (12), 11th in rushing touchdowns (11) and rushing yards/game (113.4), 18th in rushing yards/carry (6.38) and 23rd in scoring (8.0 points/game). Tennessee Tech quarterback Bailey Fisher (Co-Offensive), Eastern Kentucky linebacker Leodis Moore (Defensive) and Austin Peay kicker Logan Birchfield (Specialist) rounded out this week's honorees.
Holding the Lead
Southeast Missouri has led its opponent in 12-straight quarters. The last time the Redhawks trailed in a game was with 3:41 left in the fourth quarter (27-24) against Austin Peay (Oct. 13).
Scoring Machine
The Redhawks are second in the Ohio Valley Conference and 10th in the nation in scoring offense with 39.4 points per game. Southeast Missouri has won four of its last five games by 17 or more points. The Redhawks also scored 40 or more points on four occasions this year. The Redhawks 355 points are presently third-most in a season in school history. SEMO's 39.4 points are on pace to break the school's current record of 34.7 set in 2002. Fourteen different Redhawks have scored a touchdown through nine games this season.
Mr. Milestone
Senior tailback Marquis Terry became the first Ohio Valley Conference player and seventh running back in the Football Championship Subdivision to go over 1,000 rushing yards in 2018. Terry ran for 107 yards and a touchdown, and caught a career-high six passes for 76 yards and another touchdown against Tennessee State (Nov. 3). He went over 1,000 yards for the second year in a row and leads the OVC in total rushing yards (1,021), rushing touchdowns (11) and rushing yards per game (113.4) through nine contests. Terry ranks seventh in the nation in rushing yards, 11th in both rushing touchdowns and rushing yards per game, and 18th in rushing yards per carry (6.4). He also went over 2,000 career yards (2,097) against the Tigers and enters the week ranked eighth all-time at SEMO in that category.
Back-to-Back 1,000-Yard Seasons
Marquis Terry became the first Southeast Missouri running back to rush for over 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons since 1993 and 1994. Kelvin Anderson finished with 1,016 rushing yards in 1993 and 1,005 in 1994. Terry was SEMO's top rusher with 1,076 yards in 2017.
Red-Hot Redhawks
Southeast Missouri is currently the hottest team in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Redhawks head to Murray State on a five-game winning streak and winners in seven of their last eight contests. Three of those victories were on the road. SEMO's five-game winning streak is the longest in the OVC and the program's longest winning streak since the Redhawks won nine-straight in 2010.
Two or Less Losses
The Redhawks are among 19 Football Championship Subdivision teams with two or less losses this season. Colgate (8-0), Princeton (8-0) and North Dakota State (9-0) are the only undefeated teams left. UC Davis (8-1), Kennesaw State (8-1), Dartmouth (7-1), Stetson (7-1), East Tennessee State (8-2), San Diego (7-2), Southeast Missouri (7-2), North Carolina A&T (7-2), Monmouth (7-2), Weber State (7-2), Eastern Washington (7-2), Delaware (7-2), Jacksonville State (7-2), South Dakota State (6-2), Penn (6-2) and Elon (6-2) follow. SEMO is tied for ninth in the country in win-loss percentage (.778).
100-Yard Streak
Marquis Terry ran for over 100 yards in three-straight games. Terry rushed for 101 yards vs. Jacksonville State (Oct. 20), 123 at UT Martin (Oct. 27) and 107 vs. Tennessee State (Nov. 3). He leads the Ohio Valley Conference with five 100-yard games this season and ranks tied for ninth among Southeast Missouri career leaders with a total of nine 100-yard games.
No Picks Here
Quarterback Daniel Santacaterina has thrown 124 consecutive passes without an interception. Santacaterina went each of his last three starts without throwing a pick. He has not thrown an interception in six of his nine starts under center. The last time Santacaterina threw an interception was during the Redhawks third drive of the game against Austin Peay (Oct. 13).
Another Sharp Effort
Daniel Santacaterina threw for 306 yards and matched a season-high four passing touchdowns in Southeast Missouri's 38-21 win over Tennessee State (Nov. 3). Santacaterina threw three touchdown passes to Kristian Wilkerson for the second week in a row. He also rushed for 27 yards on eight carries. Santacaterina threw for over 300 yards for the fourth time in his last five starts.
Record Pace
In his first year as Southeast Missouri's starting quarterback, Daniel Santacaterina is on pace to break the school's single season record in passing touchdowns. Santacaterina is presently tied for second with an Ohio Valley Conference high 23 passing touchdowns this year. He is averaging 2.5 per game and is seven away from breaking the record currently held by Jack Tomco (29 in 2002).
Leader of the Pack
Daniel Santacaterina leads the Ohio Valley Conference in passing yards (2,231), passing yards per game (247.9), passing touchdowns (23) and pass efficiency (156.6). Nationally, Santacaterina is fifth in the Football Championship Subdivision in passing touchdowns, eighth in pass efficiency, 14th in passing yards and 21st in passing yards per game. He is also 14th in points responsible for (16.0 ppg).
Wilkerson is RollingÂ
A week after breaking Southeast Missouri's single game record in receiving yards with eight catches for 263 yards and three touchdowns at UT Martin (Oct. 27), wide receiver Kristian Wilkerson finished with eight receptions for 129 yards and three more touchdowns vs. Tennessee State (Nov. 3). He put together back-to-back 100-yard receiving games for the first time in his career and surpassed 2,000 receiving yards. It was the fourth time in his career where he had multiple touchdown receptions. Wilkerson enters the week ranked tied for fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference in receptions per game (5.1) and fourth in receiving yards per contest (81.9). He is fourth in the nation in receiving touchdowns.
What a Year for Hall
Junior inside linebacker Zach Hall is having an outstanding year as the Ohio Valley Conference's leading tackler. Through nine starts, Hall leads the league in total tackles (119) and tackles per game (13.6). Nationally, he is second in the Football Championship Subdivision in total tackles and 14th in solo tackles (5.7 per game). Hall posted double-digit tackles in four-straight games and seven of his nine starts this year. Hall ranks 20th all-time with 234 career tackles at SEMO.
Redhawks Secure Winning Season
Southeast Missouri secured a winning season with its commanding 56-33 road win at UT Martin (Oct. 27). The Redhawks picked up their fourth winning season during their NCAA Division I era and first since 2010. All of SEMO's winning seasons during the Division I era have come eight years apart (1994, 2002, 2010, 2018). This year marks Tom Matukewicz's first winning season as a head coach.
Win for the Ages
Southeast Missouri ripped apart Ohio Valley Conference leader and #4 Jacksonville State in a dominating 37-14 win on Oct. 20. The Redhawks ended JSU's 36-game winning streak in OVC games. That streak was the longest active conference winning streak in Division I. JSU started its winning streak with a 42-34 win over SEMO on Nov. 23, 2013 and last lost a conference game on Nov. 16 of that season (52-14 at Eastern Illinois).
Tiller Delivers
Since taking over as Southeast Missouri's starting place kicker, Kendrick Tiller had scored 22 points on 4-of-5 field goals and 10-of-12 PATs. Tiller had never attempted a college field goal until the UT Martin game on Oct. 27, where he connected on a perfect 3-of-3 and scored 14 points en route to securing Ohio Valley Conference Specialist of the Week honors. He followed that up with 5-of-5 PATs and 1-of-2 field goals against Tennessee State (Nov. 3).
