CARBONDALE, Ill.–
Carrie Shephard scored 12 points on a game-high four 3-pointers as Southeast Missouri (0-3) dropped a 60-40 decision to longtime rival Southern Illinois (1-1) Wednesday afternoon in front of a loud crowd of 2,500 at SIU Arena.
SEMO and SIU played an early contest as part of the Salukis "Field Trip Day" which included attendance from several area schools.
Â
Shephard buried a pair of 3-pointers and used a 12-0 run to grab a 15-3 advantage with a little over two minutes left in the first quarter. SIU then scored 18-straight points, including 13 in a row to start the second quarter.Â
Â
Brittney Patrick scored the game-tying and go-ahead baskets for SIU which took its first lead at 17-15 with just under eight minutes remaining in the second period. The Salukis later carried a 25-20 lead into the intermission following their 17-5 second-quarter surge.
Â
Shephard drained another 3-pointer to bring SEMO within four (29-25) early in the third quarter, but that was as close as the Redhawks would get. SIU answered Shephard's three with a 10-3 run to pull ahead, 39-28, at the 3:15 mark.
Â
SEMO made it a two-possession game once more when
Jocelyn Taylor's layup closed SIU's lead to 42-36 twelve seconds into the final stanza. After that, the Salukis scored 12 unanswered points as the Redhawks did not score for 5:36.
Â
Shephard played 26 minutes with all of her points coming from beyond the arc. It was the first time she scored double figures as a Redhawk.
Tesia Thompson followed with eight points and seven rebounds.
Adrianna Murphy contributed five points and now has 700 in her SEMO career. Meanwhile, Taylor pulled down a season-high eight rebounds and three blocks.
Â
SEMO shot just 25.9 percent (14-of-54) from the field and turned the ball over a season-high 23 times.
Â
Nicole Martin paved the way for SIU with a game-high 19 points. Martin went 8-of-13 from the field, pulled down eight rebounds and dished out two assists. Makenzie Silvey added 17 points and Abby Brockmeyer turned in a double-double 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Â
SIU finished with a .386 (22-of-57) field goal percentage and moved to 7-0 against the Redhawks in Carbondale.
Â
SEMO, which opened the season with three consecutive road games, will host Western Illinois in its home-opener after a six-day layoff. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m., CT, at the Show Me Center on Nov. 20.Â
