CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Annie Wehrheim recorded a career best 24 kills including six in the fifth set as Southeast Missouri women's volleyball (12-7, 4-2) outlasted Tennessee Tech (7-13, 1-5), 3-2 (25-16, 25-22, 22-25, 23-25, 15-13), Saturday afternoon at Houck Field House.
With the victory, Southeast has now tallied their highest win total (12) in the past four seasons.
After winning the first two sets, 25-16, 25-22, Tennessee Tech answered back with third and fourth sets of 25-22 and 25-23 to knot the match at 2-2 and force a fifth set.
In the fifth and final set,
Haley Bilbruck registered a kill to give the Redhawks a slight 4-3 edge.
Back-to-back block assists by SEMO then extended the advantage to 6-4.
Elissa Moylan teamed up with Bilbruck at the net followed by
Maggie Adams and
Laney Malloy combining for the block assists.
Malloy chipped in a kill to push the Redhawks lead to 7-5 before the Golden Eagles took the lead, 8-7, on three straight points. A rally stopper by Ali Verzani brought TTU's edge to 11-8.
Southeast rebounded with three straight kills from Adams and Wehrheim (2) to even the set at 11-11. Wehrheim added two more kills to even the set again at 12-12 and 13-13 before Malloy stood tall with a solo block to claim the match with a 15-13 fifth set.
SEMO opened the match with a 25-16 first set win behind a .324 team-hitting clip. The Redhawks jumped out to a 5-1 lead and grew their advantage to 17-10 after blocks from
Krista Berns and Malloy.
Kills from Malloy and Wehrheim extended the margin to 21-13 as TTU came as close as 24-16 on a Verzani kill.
Southeast then improved its hitting percentage with a .500 mark in the second set. A kill from Wehrheim moved the lead to SEMO, 11-10, halfway through the set.
Kills from Malloy and Adams before and after a Bilbruck service ace made the scoreboard read, 18-14.
Wehrheim slammed two kills to provide the Redhawks with a 21-17 advantage before Tennessee Tech tied the set at 21-21 after a 4-0 run.
Erica Grant of TTU would tie the score for the final time in the second set, 22-22, with a kill as SEMO closed the frame with kills from Bilbruck and Adams coupled with a Golden Eagles error.
Tennessee Tech responded with 25-22 and 25-23 third and fourth sets to push the match to a fifth set tiebreaker.
Malloy, Bilbruck and
Claire Ochs each recorded double-doubles in the victory. Malloy totaled 13 kills with a team high 18 digs. Bilbruck notched her fourth straight career double-double with 13 kills along with a career-tying mark of 15 digs.
Ochs dished out a team best 54 assists with 14 digs. She also matched a career best of three service aces.
Ally Dion posted 14 digs and
Madeline Grimm added eight.
Southeast out blocked the Golden Eagles, 12-8, as Malloy paced the team with a career best of six. Berns also had six total blocks and both Adams and Bilbruck tallied four each.
SEMO continues its 2018 schedule with its second conference road trip. The Redhawks will face Eastern Kentucky Friday, Oct. 12 at 5 p.m. in Richmond, Kentucky, before a 1 p.m. contest with Morehead State, Saturday, Oct. 13 in Morehead, Kentucky.
