Late Goal Lifts Cardinals Over Redhawks, 1-0

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri soccer (3-3) hosted Louisville (5-1) its non-conference finale Monday at Houck Field. The Cardinals netted a late goal to defeat the Redhawks, 1-0.

Southeast's defense was strong despite the Cardinals dominating possession much of the contest. Maddi Karstens, Lauren Kaempfe, and Bri Caccavale played the full 90 minutes on defense for SEMO.

The Cardinals outshot Southeast 16-8 in the game. The Redhawks were held to just two shots in the first half but came out to put up six in the latter. Jermima Job and Jennifer Brien each took two shots. The Redhawks put just two shots on goal.

Cardinal freshman Morgan Dewey netted the game winner in the 84th minute of the game. Kennadi Carbin crossed the ball over the box to a waiting Dewey who took the shot past Kindra Lierz's right and into the back of the net.

Lierz (2-3) suffered the loss in goal. She made five stops in 90 minutes. Her five saves move her to 240 in her career, 14 shy of tying the all-time record.

Gabrielle Kouzelos (5-1) earned the solo shutout, making two saves.

Southeast will look to the start of Ohio Valley Conference play on Sept. 15. The Redhawks will host Tennessee Tech in the opener at 6:30 p.m. at Houck. SEMO will then open a five-game road stretch before hosting the final four games of the regular season at Houck.
