Redhawks Fall to Austin Peay in Three

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's volleyball (6-11, 1-2) outhit Austin Peay (14-3, 2-0) in the first two sets but dropped a three-set match (23-25, 22-25, 16-25) to the Governors, Friday night at Houck Field House.
 
The Redhawks and Austin Peay exchanged seven ties in a highly competitive, opening set. Southeast jumped out to a 4-1 lead with kills from Krista Berns, Nzingha Clarke and Mikayla Kuhlmann.
 
Tied at 17-17, the Governors rallied off four straight points as SEMO burned both timeouts. After the second break, Southeast forced three-straight Austin Peay errors and Kuhlmann added one of her four opening frame kills to tie the set at 21-21 prompting a Governors timeout.
 
Two more errors from Austin Peay brought the score to 23-23 before the Governors edged out the first set with a kill from Ashley Slay and a Redhawks error.
 
Austin Peay committed nine errors in the opening frame.
 
The second set featured nine ties and was another tight race to 25. Southeast hit a match-high .256 to outhit the visitors for the second straight set.
 
SEMO and Austin Peay exchanged errors to tie the set at 16-16 before the Governors rallied off three-straight points to take a 19-16 lead. The Redhawks would cut the deficit to a point, 20-21, with a kill from Madara Bajare before Brooke Moore hit a kill to extend Austin Peay's lead to 23-21.
 
Southeast then called a timeout and cut the lead to 22-23 on a kill from Krissa Gearring before back-to-back kills from Kristen Strucker closed out the set in APSU's favor, 25-22.
 
The Governors finished the match with a 25-16 final set.
 
Gearring led the Redhawks offense with 10 kills and Kuhlmann added eight. Allie Henkelman dished out 16 assists and Keegan Fornoff chipped in 11.
 
Defensively, Ally Dion led the team with 14 digs and Fornoff totaled 11 for her first double-double of the 2017 campaign.
 
734 fans packed into Houck Field House for Friday's fifth annual Houck Filled House promotion.
 
The Redhawks face Murray State (10-5, 2-1) tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Houck Field House. Saturday continues Family Weekend with Take a Kid to the Game. Kids 14 and under receive FREE ADMISSION to Saturday's match and must be accompanied by an adult. Fans can also receive free admission to the match with a Redhawks Football ticket for Saturday's game (6 p.m. kickoff). The team will also be signing post-match autographs.
