CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Southeast Missouri (13-5, 5-2) clinched a spot in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament with a 6-1 win over Jacksonville State (4-14, 0-6) Saturday.
SEMO is headed to the OVC Tournament for the first time since 2007. The Redhawks finished no higher than eighth in the OVC in the previous nine seasons.
The Redhawks began the day with a 2-0 advantage after the Gamecocks had to default at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions due to injuries. In doubles,
Isabella Krupa and
Oleksandra Doroshenko tallied a, 7-5, win at the top of the lineup to gain the doubles point.
Kseniya Zonova and
Anais Emelie were down, 6-5, but didn't complete their match.
SEMO needed only one singles victory to win the match. The Redhawks would get that when Krupa (No. 1) and Doroshenko (No. 2) and Warasanti (No. 4) won their matches in straight sets.
"Today we focused on high energy and aggressiveness," said head coach
Mary Beth Gunn. "Jacksonville's top four players are very solid and winning three of those matchups was a good confidence builder."
The Redhawks close out the regular season with a pair of home matches against Eastern Illinois (Apr. 14) and SIU Edwardsville (Apr. 15) next weekend.
