Redhawks Earn Series Split with Red Wolves; Win 10-4

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri baseball team (15-12) defeated Arkansas State (15-14) Wednesday evening at Capaha Field, 10-4.

With the win, Southeast earns a split of the midweek home-and-home series after falling 10-1 on Tuesday in Jonesboro.

Both teams scattered eight hits in the game. Clayton Evans and Chris Caffrey each recorded two hits while Caffrey drove in three runs after entering the game in the sixth inning. Dan Holst and Brian Lees both drove in a pair of runs.

Starter Nate Green worked five and a third innings but left with the game tied to suffer a no decision. He allowed two runs on four hits in his outing. Jared Waldhoff (1-0) became the pitcher of record when SEMO took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Waldhoff worked one and two-thirds innings of scoreless, hitless baseball, allowing just a walk.

Carlos Vega earned his third save of the season. He pitched the final inning and two-thirds, striking out four of the six batters he faced.

A two-out walk led to the first Arkansas State run in the top of the fourth inning. Justin Felix drove in Garrett Rucker with a double ripped down the left field line to take a 1-0 lead.

Walks and a wild pitch early in the bottom of the fifth had runners in scoring position for the Redhawks with one out. Holst doubled to the wall in center, scoring Evans and tying the game. Chris Osborne was gunned down on an 8-6-2 relay to the plate on the play but Holst took third. Holst put the Redhawks on top for the first time in the series when he scored on a passed ball, 2-1.

The Red Wolves wasted no time tying the game in the top of the sixth. Drew Tipton led off with a single up the middle and was moved into scoring position on a sac bunt. Joe Schrimpf drove Tipton in on a single into left center. With runners on the corners, SEMO went to the pen for Waldhoff. One pitch induced a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play to preserve the 2-2 tie.

Southeast recaptured the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning with a quartet of runs. With bases loaded, Tristen Gagan plated one run with a single through the right side, breaking the 2-2 tie. Lees drove in a couple with a double to center. With one out, Caffrey grounded out to second, driving in the fourth run of the inning, 6-2 SEMO.

With two on and one out in the top of the eighth, Rucker and Felix recorded back-to-back singles to pull within two, 6-4. Vega entered to pitch for the Redhawks, striking out both hitters he faced to preserve the lead and get out of the inning.

The Redhawks plated four more runs in the bottom of the inning. With bases loaded and no out, Holst drew a walk to drive in a run. Gagan hit a slow chopper towards the third baseman who threw home for the play at the plate. The catcher dropped the ball for an error and allowing Evans to score. Caffrey drove in two more with a double down the right field line, 10-4.

Schrimpf, Rucker, and Felix, the 2-3-4 hitters in the A State lineup, all had two hits each.

Southeast Missouri returns to Ohio Valley Conference action this weekend at Eastern Illinois. The series will open Friday at 3 p.m.
