Redhawks Drop Doubleheader Opener, 9-8; Game Two Suspended

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri (21-20, 11-12) and Tennessee Tech (32-18, 18-2) squared off in a doubleheader Saturday at Capaha Field. TTU was victorious in game one of the day, 9-8, in a 10-inning affair.

The nightcap was suspended in the bottom of the fifth inning with Southeast on top, 5-4. The teams will attempt to resume the game Sunday; however, if the teams cannot resume, the Redhawks will earn the win as the game is an official contest through four and a half innings.

Follow SEMO baseball on Facebook and Twitter for updates regarding Sunday's resumption. A time to resume the series finale has not been set at this time.

Tennessee Tech 9, Southeast Missouri 8 (10 innings)
The Redhawk offense outhit the Golden Eagles in the game, 14-13. Chris Osborne and Danny Wright each scattered a trio of hits. Osborne drove in three runs and fell a double shy of hitting for the cycle. Dan Holst also drove in three runs in his two-hit game.

Redhawk starter Justin Murphy pitched seven and two-thirds innings. He gave up seven runs on eight hits. He recorded a no decision after Southeast tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning.

In his first appearance in two weeks following injury, Carlos Vega (1-2) pitched the 10th inning for Southeast, recording the loss after allowing the go-ahead run.

In his start for TTU, Jake Usher worked four and a third innings, giving up three runs on seven hits. He struck out four but also walked four in his outing.

Travis Moths (2-0) earned the win as the pitcher of record in the 10th inning. He pitched the three final innings, allowing four runs on five hits.

The Redhawks broke the scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. After walks to Clayton Evans and Kyle Bottger, a wild pitch by Usher moved both into scoring position. Dan Holst poked a two-out base knock through the right side to plate both runners and put SEMO up 2-0. Holst was tagged out at the plate on a single through four hole by Chris Osborne to end the inning.

With two on, Anthony Carrera split the right center gap to tie the game up at two runs each in the top of the third.

Ryan Flick put the Golden Eagles on top with a solo home run to left in the fourth, 3-2.

Osborne led off the bottom of the fifth with a home run to left center, knotting the game up at 3-3.

Connor Basler was hit in the leg by a pitch then was bunted to second by Bottger in the bottom of the sixth. Holst popped a ball up down the left field line to appear to end the inning; however, the left fielder couldn't make the catch, allowing Basler to score and putting SEMO back on top, 4-3.

Much like the sixth inning of game one of the series, TTU put up a five spot in the eighth in game two. The inning was highlighted by a three-run home run by Chase Chambers to go up 8-4.

After a quick two out in the bottom of the eighth, the Redhawks revved up the offense to retie the contest. Bottger reached on an infield single then went first to third on a base hit by Holst. Both runs scored on a triple that plugged the right center gap by Osborne. Brian Lees followed with a ground ball to the third baseman whose throw to first was high, allowing Osborne to score and Lees to take second on the play. Tristen Gagan singled over the first baseman and plated Lees to tie the game at eight all.

The game was forced into extra innings as neither team plated a run in the ninth inning.

Vega entered to pitch and surrendered the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th on a Matt Jones RBI single.

The Redhawks put two on with no out in the bottom of the inning but were held scoreless, falling in game two of the series, 9-8.

Four Golden Eagles each recorded a pair of hits while Chambers led the way with three RBI and Flick and Carrera each drove in two.

Southeast Missouri 5, Tennessee Tech 4 (Suspended in B5)
Neither team's starters made it past the first inning in the nightcap. Ryan Losman pitched the first inning but allowed three runs on three hits. He was relieved by Nate Green to begin the second. TTU starter Ty King exited with two out in the first after allowing two runs on three hits.

Tennessee Tech jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning with a two-run home run by Kevin Strohschein and a solo home run by Chambers, 3-0 TTU.

Holst led off the bottom of the inning with a leadoff home run to put SEMO on the board. Osborne followed with a double then scored on a Chris Caffrey double to pull within one run, 3-2 in the first.

Trevor Putzig homered down the left field line in the top of the third to widen the lead to 4-2.

The Redhawks plated a trio of runs in the bottom of the third on six-consecutive hits in the frame. Wright tied the game with a two-out single to right then Josh Haggerty plated the go-ahead run with a single up the middle, scoring Caffrey, 6-5 Redhawks.

Gagan led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a double laced to left center. The game was then sent into a lightning delay at approximately 5:50 p.m.

The threat of incoming rain forced the suspension on the contest.

Currently in the game, Osborne, Gagan, and Caffrey all had two hits in five innings. Green remained on the mound at the time of suspension for SEMO and Devin Lancaster, who relieved King in the first, was still pitching for TTU.
