Redhawks Fall in Series Finale, 11-7

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri baseball team (14-11, 6-6) dropped its series finale against Austin Peay (12-15, 5-7) on Sunday, 11-7.
 
The Redhawks and Govs each scattered 12 hits and committed two errors each in the game. 
 
Brian Lees recorded three hits in the game, finishing 3-for-5 with two RBI, a solo home run, and two runs scored. Lees finished the series 8-for-11 (.727) with five RBI, slugged 1.1182, and recorded a .714 on base percentage. 

Four other Redhawks each had two hits apiece. Clayton Evans and Tristen Gagan joined Lees in all going yard.
 
Robert Beltran (1-3) suffered the loss on the mound. He worked two innings, allowed four runs on two hits and walked four.
 
Brett Newberg (1-0) earned the victory. Newberg worked four and a third innings, allowed four SEMO runs on eight hits, struck out four, and walked none.
 
Levi Primasing earned his first save of the season. He worked two and a third scoreless innings, allowing only two hits to close the game.
 
Governor centerfielder Imani Willis ended Southeast's scoring first streak with a solo home run to left in the top of the first to give the Govs their first lead of the weekend, 1-0.
 
Evans led off the bottom half of the first inning by legging out an infield single. Evans capitalized on a failed pickoff attempt and moved up to third on the error. Dan Holst shot a bullet through the right side to score Evans and knot the game up at one run each in the first.
 
Austin Peay quickly regained the lead in the top of the second. With one out, Beltran walked the bases loaded. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Max Remy broke the tie. Kyle Wilson followed with a line drive base hit to right, plating another run and making it a 3-1 game.
 
Southeast got a run back in the bottom of the second. Lees led off the inning with a single to center then took second on a groundout. Chris Caffrey swung at a ball in the dirt for a strikeout but reached when the catcher threw to second in an attempt to get Lees out. Kyle Bottger grounded to short. The Govs got the force at second but a wild throw to first allowed Bottger to reach. On the play, Lees scored on a head-first slide from second base, cutting the lead to one, 3-2.
 
Back-to-back sacrifice flies by Garrett Giovannello and Chase Hamilton in the top of the third extended the Austin Peay lead to 5-2.
 
Home runs by Evans and Gagan in the bottom of the inning cut the lead to one, 5-4.
 
Dre Gleason contributed a two-run base hit in the top of the fourth to add to the lead. Hamilton used an RBI groundout to second to plate the third Gov run of the inning, going up 8-4 on the Redhawks.
 
Hamilton drove in his third run of the game in the top of the sixth with an RBI fielder's choice, 9-4 Govs.
 
The Redhawks' third home run of the game was off the bat of Lees in the sixth inning, 9-5 Austin Peay.
 
A pair of bases-loaded walks in the bottom of the seventh to Lees and Danny Wright narrowed the Gov lead to 9-7.
 
A wild pitch in the top of the eighth inning resulted in the Govs' 10th run of the game, 10-7.
 
Alex Robles drove in an insurance run in the top of the ninth to widen the Austin Peay advantage to 11-7.
 
Hamilton finished the game 0-for-4 but drove in a team-high three runs. Cayce Bredlau and Robles both finished with a trio of hits while Bredlau scored four runs.
 
Southeast Missouri will play a home-and-home midweek series with Arkansas State this week. The series will begin Tuesday in Jonesboro, Arkansas then conclude Wednesday at Capaha. First pitch for both games is scheduled for 6 p.m.
