CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Southeast Missouri women's tennis (7-3) opened its home schedule Sunday with wins over Maryville (8-4) and Evansville (8-9).
The Redhawks opened the day with a 6-1 victory over Maryville.
Isabella Krupa and
Oleksandra Doroshenko ( No. 1) collected a 6-3 win over over the Saints' top duo.
Kseniya Zonova and
Anais Emelie claimed victory at the No. 2 position in convincing fashion, winning 6-1.
Mila Majtan and
Ana Canahuate-Torres played tough at No. 3 but fell in a tiebreaker, 7-6.
With the 1-0 advantage heading into singles, Southeast would go on to post victories in five out of six matches. Doroshenko (No. 2), Zonova (No. 3),
Annisa Warasanti (No. 4), Majtan (No. 5) and Emelie (No. 6) all won in straight sets, never surrendering more than three points in a set. Krupa battled at the top spot, fighting her way back to force a third set. She would eventually fall in the tiebreaker, 10-8.
In the afternoon, SEMO played UE to clinch in both doubles and singles play. Zonova and Emelie made quick work of their matchup at No. 2, tallying a quick, 6-1, victory. Krupa and Doroshenko were in a fight at the top of the lineup but eventually collected the win, 6-4. Majtan and Torres were losing, 5-4, at No. 3 but didn't finish the match.
During singles play, the Redhawks picked up the first two wins to take a 3-0 advantage. Zonova won first at the No. 3 position, 6-3, 6-3. Emelie followed with a, 6-4, 6-3, win at the bottom of the lineup. The Purple Aces would then claim the next two matches winning, 6-2, 6-3, and, 6-0, 7-6, over Krupa and Warasanti, respectively. Doroshenko clinched the 4-2Â victory at No. 2, winning a three-set thriller, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Majtan (No. 5) didn't finish her match.
"I'm so proud of how our team handled adversity today," said head coach
Mary Beth Gunn. "Playing back-to-back matches is tough. We are growing as a team and starting to show maturity in our game."
SEMO will end non-conference play Wednesday with a road contest at Lipscomb. The match will start at 1 p.m.
