QUINCY, Ill. -- The Southeast Missouri (2-2) women's tennis team collected its second win of the season with a 5-2 victory over Western Illinois (3-3) Saturday.
"We came out very strong in doubles today and that gave us the momentum going into the singles matches," said head coach
Mary Beth Gunn. "I'm very proud of the way our student-athletes handled themselves on the court; we looked mentally tough and handled the tight moments well. (Mila) Majtan and (Ana) Torres saved six match points in order to come back and win their doubles match."
SEMO opened the day sweeping doubles to take the early advantage.
Isabella Krupa and
Oleksandra Doroshenko took care of business at the top of the lineup, beating WIU's Courtney Lubbers and Natalia Bravo, 6-3.
Kseniya Zonova and
Anais Emelie won by the widest margin in the No. 2 position, defeating Maria Bessmertnaya and Nicole Jones, 6-2.
Mila Majtan paired with Ana Canhuate-Torres (No. 3) and played a tough match, winning, 7-5, in a come back victory.
The Redhawks won four out of six matches in singles play to complete the victory over the Leathernecks. Doroshenko (No. 2), Zonova (No. 3), Majtan (No. 5) and Emelie (No. 6) all won in straight sets, beating their opponents handily. Krupa lost at the top of the lineup and Warasanti fell at No. 4.Â
SEMO closes out the weekend against Quincy Sunday.
