Redhawks Lose to Eastern Illinois, 86-80, in Overtime

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Montell Goodwin scored 24 points and made six 3-pointers to help Eastern Illinois (13-13, 5-8) edge Southeast Missouri (12-16, 7-6), 86-80, in overtime Saturday.
 
SEMO trailed by five points with 56 seconds left to play in regulation when Trey Kellum threw down a dunk and Jamaal Calvin buried a game-tying 3-pointer. Calvin's three came with 25 seconds on the clock.
 
Goodwin's jumper with three seconds left danced on the rim three times before bouncing off and setting up the overtime period.
 
After Denzel Manhoney tied the game at 75-75 with 2:40 to go, EIU went on an 8-0 run to get an 83-75 lead. Muusa Dama accounted for seven of the points during that stretch which propelled the Panthers to victory.
 
EIU dropped in five of its first seven 3-pointers of the game and shot 50 percent (14-of-28) in the first half.
 
The Panthers took a 32-20 lead on Muusa Dama's jumper with 7:57 remaining before SEMO outscored EIU, 21-10, to make it a 42-41 game at the intermission. The Redhawks made seven of its final 11 shots and hit four of their last five 3-pointers in the first half.
 
Mahoney scored the Redhawks first seven points of the game and tallied 16 in the opening period, while Tahj Eaddy buried a pair of 3-pointers, including one just before halftime.
 
Both teams struggled to get shots to fall in the second half, as EIU went 12-of-34 (35.3 pct.) and SEMO went 10-of-30 (33.3 pct.) from the field.
 
The Redhawks turned the ball over 11 times in the second half, but battled back to give the game its fifth tie on Calvin's make.
 
Goodwin shot 7-of-18 from the field and 6-of-11 from 3-point range. He also had four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
 
Ray Crossland (15 pts., 11 reb.), Demetrius McReynolds (11 pts., 10 reb.) and Dama (14 pts., 18 reb.) each finished with a double-double. Dama also collected five blocks.
 
Terrell Lewis put up 10 points and a game-high nine asists.
 
EIU outrebounded SEMO, 52-46, with 15 offensive boards.
 
Mahoney, who had 16 first-half points, led SEMO with 22 and pulled down seven rebounds.
 
Kellum followed with a double-double 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Antonius Cleveland pitched in 14 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out five assists.
 
SEMO returns home to host UT Martin on the front end of a season-long three-game homestand at the Show Me Center.
