Series History
Tennessee State holds a slight 13-11 edge in its all-time series against Southeast. The Tigers won four of the last five meetings and beat the Redhawks by seven or less points each of the previous two. Southeast is 2-8 all-Â time in Nashville, last winning there, 24-21, on Nov. 23, 1996. Since then, the Redhawks have lost seven in a row to the Tigers away from home.
W.J. Hale Stadium
For the first time since 1996, Southeast faces Tennessee State at W.J. Hale Stadium on the Tigers campus. Nicknamed "The Hole," W.J. Hale Stadium served as the home of TSU football games until 1999. After that, the Tigers played their home games at the Tennessee Titans' Nissan Stadium. In 2012, TSU returned to "The Hole" and continues to play some games there. Both of Southeast's wins against the Tigers in Nashville came at W.J. Hale Stadium. The Redhawks won there on Nov. 19, 1994 (17-12) and Nov. 23, 1996 (24-21).
Last Time Against TSU
Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Year Patrick Smith caught 11 passes for 166 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown with 16 seconds left to give Tennessee State a 32-31 win over Southeast on Nov. 19, 2016. The Redhawks and Tigers met in the season-finale of the 2016 campaign. TSU and Southeast combined for 40 points in the second half with 24 coming in a wild fourth quarter.
Winding Down
Southeast returns home to host rival Murray State in its final game of the 2017 season on Nov. 18. The Redhawks will honor their seniors prior to kickoff. That game also marks Military Appreciation Day. Southeast will wrap up its season at home for the fourth-straight year.
Three-Game Skid
The Redhawks are looking to snap a three-game losing streak when they square off against Tennessee State Saturday. Southeast dropped two of those contests by seven points or less.Â
Another Close One
A last second 22-yard field goal by UT Martin's Mitch Mersman sent Southeast to its seventh loss of the season on Nov. 4. It marked the third time this season where the Redhawks lost by three points or less. Three of Southeast's losses have been by a combined seven points this year.
Hosket Clears 4,000 Passing Yards
Quarterback Jesse Hosket went over 4,000 passing yards in his career when he completed 9-of-19 passes for 90 yards and a touchdown against UT Martin (Nov. 4). Hosket now has 4,033 passing yards in his career. He has thrown for 1,701 yards and 13 touchdowns this season alone. Matt Scheible was the last Southeast quarterback to throw for more than 4,000 career yards (4,841 from 2008-11).
Sack it Up
Southeast leads the Ohio Valley Conference and ranks 19th in the Football Championship Subdivision in sacks. The Redhawks have a total of 26 sacks for a loss of 153 yards and average 2.89 per game. Thirteen of those sacks have come in the last two weeks alone with a season-high eight at Jacksonville State (Oct. 28) and five vs. UT Martin (Nov. 4). Zach Hall and Kendall Donnerson lead the team with seven and four sacks, respectively. Hall is also tied for second in the OVC and 22nd in the nation in sacks.
Swift Effort
Outside linebacker Justin Swift turned in five tackles at Jacksonville State (Oct. 28). Swift tallied three sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss against the Gamecocks. A week later, Swift registered a career-high nine tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery in his first career start against UT Martin (Nov. 4). He moved into a tie for second on the team with four sacks in just two contests.
Wilkerson and Miles Return
Starters Kristian Wilkerson (WR) and Reggie Miles (NT) returned against UT Martin (Nov. 4). Wilkerson missed the Jacksonville State game due to an ankle injury and Miles was out the Austin Peay and Jacksonville State games with a concussion. Miles had three tackles against the Skyhawks.
Terry Goes Over 100 Again
Marquis Terry ran for a game-high 154 yards against UT Martin (Nov. 4), his third 100-yard performance of the season. Terry averaged 7.7 yards per carry on 20 attempts. He also had a season-long 68-yard run. Terry enters the week first in the Ohio Valley Conference and 14th in the Football Championship Subdivision with 96.4 rushing yards per game.
Larson Hits Paydirt
Logan Larson scored his second career touchdown on a 5-yard pass from Jesse Hosket to give Southeast a 14-13 lead with 14:54 left to play in the fourth quarter against UT Martin (Nov. 4). Larson caught his first touchdown pass since scoring on a 5-yard reception against Jacksonville State on Nov. 22, 2014.Â
Approaching 1,000
Marquis Terry needs just 132 more rushing yards to reach 1,000 this season. If Terry hits the mark, he will become the second Redhawk running back to rush for over 1,000 yards in three seasons. Tremane McCullough was Southeast's last 1,000-yard rusher with 1,028 yards in 2015. Currently, there are four players who have rushed for over 1,000 yards in the Football Championship Subdivision this year. They include Campbell's Daniel Smith (1,188), Maine's Josh Mack (1,152), Alcorn's De'Lance Turner (1,009) and Dayton's Tucker Yinger (1,005).
Williams Plays Strong
Tight end Eric Williams matched a career-high four receptions in his first career start against UT Martin (Nov. 4). Williams finished with four catches for 47 yards against the Skyhawks. He also made a 25-yard reception, marking his second consisting of 25 or more yards this year. Williams has had a catch in five-straight games.
Start Tracker
Jesse Hosket started 20-consecutive games since he took over as Southeast's quarterback in 2016. Hosket is the Redhawks first quarterback to start back-to-back seasons in six years. Meanwhile, Drew Forbes has started 20 games in a row at left tackle. In addition, senior Alex Snyder has started 30 of his last 31 games. Snyder started 11 games at left tackle and 19 at right tackle during his career.
