CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo – Southeast Missouri women's tennis continued their fall season Saturday when they hosted the Redhawks Invitational at the Redhawk Tennis Complex.
SEMO faced fellow Ohio Valley Conference school, Murray State, in the morning and then raced against the rain in their afternoon dual against Maryville.
The Redhawks had a strong showing in their second fall tournament of the season, winning a handful of matches against the Racers and then winning or leading all of their matches versus Maryville.
Oleksandra Doroshenko won both of her first singles matches to improve her overall record to 4-1. Doroshenko beat Stasya Sharapova of Murray State 6-4, 6-1 in her morning match and then defeated Sarah Etter, 6-2, 7-6 (6), in the afternoon.
Doroshenko teamed up with Isabella Krupa in doubles. The duo played in the first doubles slot against Murray State and lost to Claire Chang and Amina Hadzic, 6-1, but bounced back in their second doubles match against Etter and Kine Sando Kleppe (Maryville), 6-0. Doroshenko and Krupa now have a 3-2 record in the fall.
Krupa (2-4) split her second singles matches. She took the opening set on Chang of Murray State, 6-4, before Chang took the next two sets, 6-4, 10-5. Krupa then beat Maryville's Rebekah Anderson, 6-4, 6-2, in the afternoon match.
Kseniya Zonova (3-2) also went 1-1 in her matches on Saturday. Zonova dropped her first match to Hadzic (MSU), 6-4, 6-3, but then beat Maryville's Lina Kunert, 6-3, 7-6 (4).
Freshman Alessandra Maya Thompson (0-1) appeared in her first career collegiate tournament. She competed in the fourth singles slot and lost in her first career match to Jeanne Masson. Maya Thompson won the first set, 6-3 before Masson won the next two sets, 7-5, 10-7. Maya Thompson was unable to finish her singles match against Sandra Hinterberger of Maryville due to rain but was leading in the match, 4-2.
Zonova and Maya Thompson competed in doubles together for the first time this season and went 2-0. They beat Sara Bjork and Masson of Murray State in the second doubles slot, 6-3, and then defeated Anderson and Kunert (Maryville) in first doubles, 6-3.
In third doubles, Anais Emelie and Maja Lundell also teamed up for the first time this season and notched a perfect, 2-0 record. Emelie and Lundell competed in third doubles and beat Sara Loncarevic and Sharapova (Murray State), 6-4, and then Hinterberger and Ashley Dowden (Maryville), 7-6 (6).
Emelie (2-1) and Lundell (2-2) only finished one singles match each as their afternoon matches against Maryville were shortened or cancelled because of rain. Emelie beat Bjork (MSU) in three sets, 7-5, 6-7, 10-7, and was leading Kine Sando Kleppe (Maryville), 3-0, before the match was called because of rain. Lundell lost to Loncarevic, 6-2, 6-3, and her second match against Maryville's Dowden was cancelled by rain.
William Woods also faced Maryville and Murray State at the Redhawks Invitational on Saturday.
