Southeast Tennis Finishes Fall Season at SIUE

Zonova and Lundell Win their Singles Flights

Edwardsville, Ill. – Southeast Missouri women's tennis wrapped up their 2017 fall season on Saturday at the SIUE Indoor Invitational.
 
Kseniya Zonova won the Flight C singles bracket and Maja Lundell went undefeated to win the Flight E singles draw. Oleksandra Doroshenko took second in Flight A singles and Alessandra Maya Thompson finished fourth in the Flight D singles draw.
 
"We had a very strong showing in singles this weekend with Zonova and Lundell winning their flights," head coach Mary Beth Gunn said. "I am pleased with the fight that everybody showed on the court."
 
Zonova claimed the Flight C singles after she finished as a consolation semifinalist at the 2017 ITA Central Regional Championship last Sunday. In the finals on Saturday, she defeated Amiru Shimoguchi of Central Arkansas, 7-5, 6-3.
 
Zonova breezed by Western Michigan's Jeryn Jack, 6-2, 6-4, in the semifinals to advance to the championship final match and opened the draw with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Anna Daniel Fuentes (UW Milwaukee).
 
Lundell went a perfect 3-0 in Flight E singles. She beat Anna Jones (Wright State) 6-0, 3-6, 10-4 on Friday to start her invite. On Saturday, Lundell outlasted Milwaukee's Joie Beth Freirich, 5-7, 7-3, 10-7. Lundell concluded her singles invite with a 7-5, 5-7, 10-4 win against Rada Manataweewat (Central Arkansas) to claim the Flight E singles title.
 
Doroshenko started her Flight A singles draw with a match against Krystal Grubb (IUPUI). She lost the opening set, 4-6, before rallying off second and third set wins, 6-2, 10-2, on Friday. Doroshenko then beat QiLi Ma of Central Arkansas in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-0, to advance to the finals.
 
In the championship final, Doroshenko fell to Pornpawee Pramethong, 6-4, 7-5.
 
Maya Thompson placed fourth after she lost the D Flight third place match to IUPUI's Krystal Grubb, 6-4, 7-5. Maya Thompson beat Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Lucy Harper, 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 on Friday and then fell to Marli Van Heerden (Central Arkansas) in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-1.
 
Isabella Krupa lost in her first round Flight B singles match to Wright State's Jillian Milano, 6-3, 6-7 (0-3), 10-6, on Friday.
 
Anais Emelie competed in both the Flight C and E Singles draws. Emelie lost to Amiru Shimoguchi (Central Arkansas), 6-4, 6-1 in Flight C. Emelie then fell to Western Michigan's Jeryn Jack, 6-3, in the Flight E draw.
 
In doubles, Maya Thompson and Doroshenko finished as the B Flight Doubles runner-ups in their first tournament as partners. The duo beat IUPUI's Krystal Grubb and Samantha Mayer, 6-4, on Friday to open their doubles bracket. Maya Thompson and Doroshenko then defeated Valeria Riegraf and Jeryn Jack (Western Michigan), 6-4, in the semifinals.
 
In the finals, Thompson and Doroshenko lost to Xylia Chunan Xiang and Amiru Shimoguchi, 6-1.
 
Krupa and Zonova also partnered together for the first time this fall and fell in their opening round Flight A doubles match to Haily Morgan and Luisa Pelayo of Wright State, 6-3. Lundell and Emelie also lost their first B Flight doubles match to Xylia Chunan Xiang and Amiru Shimoguchi (Central Arkansas), 6-3.
 
The Redhawks open their 2018 season on Jan. 20 at Missouri in Columbia.
