CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri men's and women's cross country teams will run in the 57th annual OVC Championships on Saturday.
The event will be held at Panther Trail Course in Charleston, Ill., the home course for host school Eastern Illinois. The men's 8K race will begin at 9:00 a.m. CT with the women's 5K following at 10 a.m. Southeast is familiar with the trail as they ran on it earlier this season for the Walt Crawford Open.
Coach Ryan Lane believes previewing the course will play to the Redhawks advantage "Our kids will understand what the course looks like, what to expect, when to move up late in the race, and the finish line kind of creeps up on you pretty fast at this course so I think our kids knowing where that is will benefit them at the end of the race."
Each team will be looking to knock off defending champion Eastern Kentucky, the women came close last season with a second-place finish. The men's side will be looking to improve from a tenth-place finish a year ago.
Junior Kaitlyn Shea will be looking to repeat her performance the last time she ran on this course, as she placed first in the Walt Crawford Open earlier this season. Curtis Reed will be looking to be the top finisher for the men for the fifth consecutive race.
Lane mentioned the way the that cross country is set up, this meet really defines the season, and as a team they have to be ready to compete. "We will to do our best to prepare that we will ready to go on the one day that matters most for our season," said Lane.
The OVC Athletes and Freshmen of the Year, which are determined by a coaches vote, will be announced on Friday night at an awards banquet while the Coach of the Year, Athletes of the Championship and All-OVC honors will be presented following Saturday's Championship at 11 a.m.
