CHARLESTON, Ill. – Southeast Missouri women's cross country took fourth place as a team, while the men placed tenth at the 57th annual OVC Championships.
Eastern Kentucky once again swept the competition for both sides. EKU's women won for the sixth-consecutive year while the men won their twelfth-straight championship.
The women's team for SEMO fell behind Eastern Kentucky, Belmont and Eastern Illinois to secure a fourth place. Kailtyn Shea was the top runner for the women's placing twelfth individually with a time of 17:44.8 in the 5K race.
Carli Knott (17:48.5), Danielle Mohrmann (18:08.7) and Rachel Hutchcraft (18:25.5) were the next best finishers for the women placing 17th, 20th and 33rd, respectively. All three times were significant personal records. Angie Sumner, who ran with a minor calf injury, finished 40th with a time of 18.37.5 in her final race for Redhawks cross country.
"The girls ran their best race of the year," said head coach Ryan Lane "With the way Carli, Danielle and Rachel ran we were able to gracefully survive Angie's injury. Everyone stepped up and ran really well as a group."
In the men's 8K, the best runner for Southeast was once again Curtis Reed who finished 50th with a time of 25.58.3. Griffin Bailey was next best for SEMO with a time of 26:15.9 good for a 55th place finish.
In the awards ceremony following the women's race, Kaitlyn Shea was selected to the All-OVC Second Team. Shea was dominant for the Redhawks all year with two first-place finishes and the top runner for the Redhawks every race.
"She didn't have an amazing day but she was still all-conference, that's the level she's on right now," said Lane. "Her work she's putting in is also helping lead the other girls and push them to new levels."
Cross Country will compete next in the NCAA Midwest Regional next.
