Ames, Iowa – Southeast Missouri cross country competed in the NCAA Midwest Regional meet Friday morning at Iowa State University.
Both the men and women for SEMO took 28th place as a team, with the men only running a partial squad. Host school Iowa State took first place as a team in both the men's 10K and women's 6K.
Kaitlyn Shea was the top runner for the women, finishing inside the top-100 with a time of 21:39.9, good for 91st place.
The next best finishers for the Southeast women were Carli Knott (22:04.2), Rachel Hutchcraft (22:13.8) and Andrea George (22:31.4). All three ran their personal best times for a 6K.
"On the women's side, had we chosen to run Angie Sumner, we would have finished around 21st," said Head Coach Ryan Lane. "They ran right around how we expected, just were missing their number two girl."
The best runner for the men was Griffin Bailey who came in at 31:33.2, good for 142th place. Curtis Reed placed 151st finishing in 31:51.4.
"With the guys, we didn't run a full squad and four of our six guys had their best race of the season," said Lane. "Had we brought a full squad we might have finished three or four spots higher."
This concludes the 2017 cross country season for the Redhawks.
"The girls season went well, we got a lot of girls back and a lot of youth so we're excited for what the future holds," said Lane. "On the guys side, we just got to take time to learn the longer distances and get comfortable with it. But, we're starting to put together the team we want to have here for the future."
Indoor track season for Southeast begins Dec. 10 with the annual SEMO vs. SIUE Dual Meet.
