Redhawks Beat Jacksonville State, 1-0, on Senior Day

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri 7-7-3, 4-3-3) concluded regular season play with a 1-0 victory over Jacksonville State (6-10-2, 3-7) for their annual senior day on Sunday afternoon.

Before the game senior players Shelby Beussink, Paige Blankenheim, Maddy Cornell, Shay Darga, Kindra Lierz and Maggie Pike plus team manager Jenna Scheer were honored pregame for their final regular season game as a Redhawk.

The first half started out with both teams being very aggressive, each attacking the goal early and often. Ultimately, neither team was able to connect on a shot in the first 45 minutes despite decent looks. Lauren Kaempfe put a shot off the cross bar late in the first half, but that was as close as it got to a score.

At halftime it was tied 0-0, SEMO led Jacksonville State in shots 8-5. The Redhawks were tied in corners 1-1.

The second half started out very similar to the first in the aggression on both sides. A little after ten minutes in at 57:42, Lexi Grote dribbled down the right sideline and crossed perfectly to Esmie Gonzales who put it in the back of the net with a header, good for her seventh goal of the season.

After the score, Southeast was able to contain Jacksonville State the rest of the game, and even remained quite aggressive on goal, but didn't connect on any more shots.

The single goal remained enough as the Redhawks went on the win the match 1-0. Southeast again had eight shots in the half while Jacksonville State had six. SEMO led in corners in the second half 5-0.

Lierz finished with five saves and the win as goalkeeper, marking a 4-6-3 record for the regular season.

The win puts Southeast in the fifth seed for the OVC tournament, right behind Belmont at four and ahead of UT Martin at six. Murray State finished the regular season as the number one seed in the OVC.

As the fifth seed, SEMO will square off against the eighth seeded Austin Peay who the Redhawks tied 1-1 earlier this season. The game will be played on Oct. 27, at 5:30 p.m. in Nashville, Tennessee.
