PEORIA, Ill. – Southeast Missouri's women's cross country took tenth place overall and had the best performance out of all OVC teams present at the Bradley Pink Classic on Friday.
The men's team finished 25th in their 8k race with a team average of 27:24.3. The race took place in the dead heat of the afternoon with sun beating down right as both teams were competing.
"It was a lot hotter than we've been used to," said head coach Ryan Lane. "Both teams ran well considering the conditions."
Kaitlyn Shea was once again the top performer for the Redhawks, placing 25th individually with a time of 21:37.6 in the 6k race. Angie Sumner came in shortly after at 21:52.4 good for a 39th place finish. As a team, the women managed to run the exact average time coach Lane had hoped for down to the second at 22:10.
Carli Knott (22:15.4) and Rachel Hutchcraft (22:51.4) also each had significant personal best times despite the conditions to help the women secure their finish.
Aside from being the dominant OVC team, the women also managed to beat three regionally ranked opponents as well in Missouri (3), Kansas State (9) and Illinois State (14).
Curtis Reed kept his streak alive as the top finisher for the men for the fourth straight race. Reed's time of 26:02.7 secured him a 75th place finish. Griffin Bailey was next best for SEMO placing 126th, finishing in 26:54.4.
"At 5 kilometers, (the men) were right where we wanted them to be, we just started falling off because of the heat," coach Lane noted.
This was the Redhawks final race before the OVC championships, which will be held on October 28 in Charleston, Ill.
