Redhawks Take the Series Over Lumberjacks with 9-5 Victory

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. ­– Southeast Missouri baseball claimed a series victory over Stephen F. Austin (27-24) Sunday with a 9-5 win in the series finale.
 
The Redhawks will carry a 34-16 overall record going into next weekend's regular-season finale against Belmont.
 
Southeast outhit the Lumberjacks, 11-8. Branden Boggetto provided power to the offense, hitting two home runs and driving in five runners in the contest.
 
Robert Beltran improved to 8-1 with a seven-inning start on the mound for the Redhawks Sunday. Beltran allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits. He struck out four and walked one.
 
Lumberjack starter Jarred Greene (4-5) suffered the loss. Greene gave up four runs on five hits in five innings of work.
 
With Chris Osborne on base, Branden Boggetto sent a two-run home run over the wall in left to put the Redhawks on top early in the first inning, 2-0.
 
With Lumberjacks in scoring position in the third inning and one out, Nick Ramos grounded out to second base, scoring the first run for SFA. The next batter, Kyle Thornell, sent a towering two-run home run to right field to give the Lumberjacks a 3-2 lead over Southeast.
 
Southeast recaptured the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Garrett Gandolfo led off the inning with a double to center field. He scored on a triple ripped down the first base line by Dan Holst, tying the game at three runs apiece. Daniel Costello flied to right for a sacrifice fly, scoring Holst and putting Southeast back on top, 4-3.
 
Holst laid down a bunt for a hit to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning. Scott Mitchell grounded out to third base for the first out. Noticing no one was covering third, Holst attempted to advance on the play. The first baseman's throw to the third base bag was wild, allowing Holst to score and widening the lead to 5-3.  
 
Boggetto's second home run of the game, this time a three-run shot down the left field line, widened the lead to 8-3 on the Lumberjacks.
 
A couple RBI groundouts by the Lumberjacks in the top of the eighth cut the Redhawk lead to 8-5.
 
Andy Lack singled to left, driving in Costello, in the bottom of the inning to bring the lead back to four, 9-5.
 
Jacob Lawrence closed the game, pitching the ninth inning, on the mound for Southeast.
 
Trevor Ezell, Boggetto, and Holst all had two hits in the game.
 
No Lumberjack hitters registered multiple hits Sunday as eight batters all had a single hit.
 
The Lumberjacks committed four errors in the game, although all nine Redhawk runs were earned.
 
Southeast Missouri welcomes Belmont to Cape Girardeau Thursday through Saturday for the final regular-season series of the season. Thursday's first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. from Capaha Field. The Kiwanis Club of Cape Girardeau and River Eagle Distributing will be providing a free tailgate at Thursday's game.
