CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Southeast Missouri's 11-game winning streak was snapped Friday evening with a 6-1 loss to Austin Peay State University (17-11, 9-4 OVC).
With the loss, the Redhawks are no longer perfect in Ohio Valley Conference play and now sit at 21-9 overall and 12-1 in league play.
Joey Lucchesi (6-2) suffered only his second loss of the season. Lucchesi pitched six innings Friday, allowing six runs, only two of which were earned. He fanned six batters and walked two.
Alex Robles (6-2) earned the victory for the Governors. Robles worked eight innings, allowing only one run on four Redhawk hits. Robles struck out seven batters and walked two. Friday's win is the third over Southeast in his career. Offensively, Robles went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Southeast Missouri was held to just four hits in the game. Southeast was held hitless after the second inning, getting only five runners on base in the span via walk or hit batsman.
Back-to-back two-out base hits by
Branden Boggetto and
Garrett Gandolfo had runners on the corners for
Chris Caffrey. Caffrey stepped in and poked a single through the right side to plate Boggetto and put Southeast on top in the first inning, 1-0.
The Govs got the run back in the bottom of the second inning. Robles singled to lead off the inning. He immediately scored on a double by Chase Hamilton, who took third on the throw home from right. Lucchesi worked around the no-out runner at third with a flyout and a pair of strikeouts, preserving the 1-1 tie.
Three Redhawk errors led to five runs for Austin Peay in the bottom of the sixth inning, four of which unearned. Lucchesi committed a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt early in the inning. Dre Gleason singled to right to plate both runners and break the 1-1 tie. A single and a two-base error by
Daniel Costello in center allowed Hamilton to reach third and Robles to score. A run scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Sala to make it 5-1 in the Govs' favor. An error by Boggetto, the third of the inning, allowed the fifth run of the inning to score. Southeast trailed 6-1 after six innings.
Four Redhawk relievers combined to hold the Govs scoreless the final two innings.
Brian Lees, Boggetto, Gandolfo, and Caffrey were responsible for the Redhawks' four hits. Caffrey owned the lone RBI.
Gleason and Hamilton each scattered three hits. In all, Austin Peay found 11 hits on the Redhawks and forced four total errors.
