CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Scouts from 18 different National Football League teams attended Southeast Missouri's pro day Thursday.
Wide receiver
Paul McRoberts, safety
David Coley and fullback
Lewis Washington participated in testing exercises at the Holcomb Success Center and Houck Stadium.
McRoberts, the only Football Championship Subdivision receiver to play in the 2016 Reese's Senior Bowl, made his return to campus after spending the last three months training at the Michael Johnson Performance Training Center in Dallas, Texas.
All 32 teams showed interest in McRoberts at some point during his final year with the Redhawks last season. The New York Jets, Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts, Philadelphia Eagles, Oakland Raiders, Chicago Bears, New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, Baltimore Ravens, Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers, Green Bay Packers, Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, Washington Redskins, Kansas City Chiefs, New York Giants and Tennessee Titans were in Cape Girardeau Thursday.
McRoberts, Coley and Washington were tested in bench press, vertical and broad jump, 40-yard dash, pro shuttle and L-Drill with a lot of their former teammates on hand showing support.
Southeast head coach
Tom Matukewicz was impressed with the turnout, particularly because the Redhawks pro day was the last one in the country this year.
"We are doing a lot of firsts here and this is the first time we had that kind of turnout for a pro day," said Matukewicz. "There's a lot of interest in Paul and some teams couldn't make it due to meetings and getting ready for the NFL Draft. It was great to see this because there are a lot of good players in our program."
A native of St. Louis, McRoberts has been working out at the Michael Johnson Performance Training Center since early January. He was the first Redhawk to play in the Senior Bowl when he took the field with the South All-Stars at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama on Jan. 30. McRoberts had four catches for 46 yards and a touchdown, and returned a punt 27 yards in that game.
After today, McRoberts will visit with multiple NFL teams between now and this year's draft which is set for Apr. 28-30 in Chicago, Illinois.
"I just want to keep having fun and not overthink things," said McRoberts. "The drills will solve themselves and everything. I thought my vertical (35 ½ inches) was really good and it was great to be back at Southeast."
According to the NFL Draft Scout publication known as Dane Brugler's 2016 NFL Draft Guide, McRoberts is projected to be a 6
th-7
th Round pick. He was ranked 35
th among receivers in that publication. Others like
NFLDraftScout.com have projected him to be a 4
th or 5
th Round selection. Thirty-four receivers were drafted in 2015, so McRoberts is close to his dream.
"Football is something I've done since I was seven years old," said McRoberts. "No matter what level I'm at, I just have fun with it and do my best. I want to be coachable, have great character and listen and learn when I come out here."
Center Eugene Amano was Southeast's last draft pick. Amano was selected by the Tennessee Titans in the seventh round (239
th pick) of the 2004 NFL Draft.
