Redhawks Win Nightcap to Force Split with Eastern Kentucky

RICHMOND, Ky. – Southeast Missouri (13-28, 7-12) ended a six-game losing streak when it split a doubleheader with Eastern Kentucky (32-11, 14-4) Saturday. The Redhawks dropped game one, 4-2, and won the nightcap, 5-2.
EKU struck first in game two, taking a 2-0 advantage on a two-out, two-RBI double by cleanup hitter Sarah Fobbs in the bottom of the first inning.
Southeast later took its first lead thanks to a pair of home runs in the fourth. Brittany Stevens, after falling behind 0-2 in the count, launched her second homer of the season over the center field wall. Then, with two runners on, Darby Pruett homered to center, putting the Redhawks ahead, 4-2.
Freshman Haley Thogmartin and reliever Mackenize Hoelting combined to shutout EKU for six innings.
Thogmartin (8-8) recorded her team-high eighth victory, scattering four hits and allowing two runs in 4.1 innings. She struck out two and walked two, as well.
Hoelting limited EKU to just one hit in 2.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen to get her second save. She faced 10 hitters and tallied six groundball outs.
Four of the first five hitters in Southeast's lineup had two hits. Claire Wernig and Stevens went 2-for-4 with run scored, while Savannah Carpenter finished at 2-for-3 with a run. Abby Tillotson also notched two hits.
Rachel Minogue's two-RBI double with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning was the difference in EKU's game one win. Paige Murphy reached on an error to start the inning and scored the go-ahead run on Minogue's extra base hit.
Minogue's hit came after Southeast tied the game on a two-run home run by Carpenter with two outs in the top of the sixth. Haylee Krack's single started a streak of four-straight two-out hits before the Colonels got out of the inning. It was Carpenter's sixth homer of the season.
Hayley Flynn (22-5) retired the Redhawks in order in the seventh to secure her Ohio Valley Conference high 22nd win this year. Flynn gave up two runs on eight hits, struck out eight and walked one in six innings.
Alex Sallberg relieved Flynn in the seventh and earned her eight save.
Madeline Krumrey (5-11) suffered the loss. Krumrey tossed her sixth complete game of the season, allowing four runs and four hits, while striking out six and walking one.
Southeast outhit EKU, 17-10, in the doubleheader.
The Redhawks close out their nine-game road stretch with a twin bill at Morehead State Sunday.
