BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Southeast Missouri (1-5) was shutout for the second time this season when it fell to Western Carolina (10-2), 8-0, Friday at the Holiday Inn Spring Fling.

WCU sent eight hitters to the plate and erupted for four runs in the bottom of the first inning.

In her second start of the season,
Mackenzie Hoelting issued walks to Abigail Daniels and Crystal Cyr, and hit Kara Salvo with a pitch, as the Catamounts quickly loaded the bases.

Daniels scored on the next play when Taylor Sigmon grounded out to short. After Courtney Price walked, Hunter Gibbons delivered a two-RBI single. Price later touched home on a sacrifice bunt to give WCU a 4-0 advantage.

The Catamounts scored once more in each of the third and fourth innings before Gibbons capped the shortened five-inning affair with a two-run homer in the fifth.

Sigmon and Courtney Buchanan combined on a three-hit shutout. Buchanan (5-1) was credited with the win, striking out four and allowing three hits in 3.2 innings. Sigmon tossed 1.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

Hoelting (0-2) took the loss, giving up six runs on four hits and walking three in three innings.
Â
Gibbons went 3-for-3 with a run scored and knocked in five of the Catamount runs.

Claire Wernig,
Darby Pruett and
Chelsea Smith each had a hit for Southeast. Wernig has hit safely in four of her first six games this year.

The Redhawks resume play at the Holiday Inn Spring Fling later today when they take on Ball State at 4:15 p.m., CT.
