Redhawks Fall to #11 Louisiana, 8-0

GULF SHORES, Ala. – Alex Stewart and Macey Smith combined on a one-hitter to lead #11 Louisiana (3-0) to an 8-0 win over Southeast Missouri (0-2) Saturday afternoon at the Sand Dollar Classic.

Only four runners reached base for Southeast, as Stewart and Macey set the tone from the start. Stewart worked three scoreless innings and recorded seven strikeouts, improving to 2-0 this season.

Harli Wheeler got on base when she was hit by a pitch. In the second, Darby Pruett struck out, but reached first base on a wild pitch. Claire Wernig then singled to center for the Redhawks only hit in the third. Nicole Deering was Southeast's lone baserunner in scoring position when she made it to second on a two-base throwing error in the fourth inning.

While Stewart and Macey were cruising in the circle, Louisiana's offense gave them plenty of run support.

The Ragin' Cajuns scored once in the first, twice in the second and broke the game open with four runs in the third.

Aleah Craighton ripped a leadoff double down the left field line and DJ Sanders was hit by a pitch. Sara Corbello followed with a single and Craighton scored. Sanders came around to score on a double play, Kendall Smith touched home on a passed ball and Haley Hayden scored on a wild pitch, giving Louisiana a comfortable 7-0 advantage.

Jamie Landry's single plated Kassidy Zeringue to finish off the win in a shortened contest.

Stewart faced 12 hitters before Smith tossed the final two scoreless no-hit innings. Neither Stewart or Smith allowed a walk, as well.

Mackenzie Hoelting (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up six hits and six runs in two innings. It was Hoelting's first career start as a Redhawk.

Kelsey Ihns and Aubrey Denno pitched the final two innings in relief. Ihns also made her pitching debut at Southeast.

Offensively, Louisiana pounded out 10 hits with Hayden and Landry combining for six hits, four runs scored and one RBI at the top of the order.

Southeast returns to action tonight when it faces Houston Baptist at 6 p.m., CT.
