Series History
UT Martin holds a slight 16-15 lead in its overall series against Southeast. The Skyhawks have won nine of the last 11 meetings between the teams. Southeast has fallen in four of its last five trips to Martin. The Redhawks, however, won the last time they played at Graham Stadium by a score of 31-27 on Sept. 27, 2014. UTM pulled out a 28-25 victory in Cape Girardeau last season.
One More on the Road
The Redhawks play their sixth and final road game of the season at UT Martin this weekend. Southeast is currently 1-4 in road games this year with its only victory coming at Murray State (17-16) on Sept. 24. The Redhawks are looking to snap a two-game road losing streak outside of Cape Girardeau.
Hosket Reaches 2,000 Yards
Jesse Hosket, who ranks third in the Ohio Valley Conference with 222.2 passing yards per game, became the third quarterback in the league to throw for 2,000 yards this season. Hosket needed 206 yards and got exactly that when he completed 14-of-39 passes for 206 yards and a touchdown against Jacksonville State (Nov. 5). He has also thrown 11 touchdown passes in nine starts this season. Hosket is the second Southeast quarterback in three years to throw for 2,000 or more yards. In all, 10 players have thrown for 2,000 or more yards in a season at Southeast since 1962.
Single-Season Lists
Jesse Hosket has placed himself on several single-season top 10 lists in his first year as Southeast's starting quarterback. Hosket enters the week ranked 10th in passing yards (2,000), 10th in pass completions (156) and seventh in pass attempts (293).
Close Games
Six of Southeast's nine games this season have been decided by eight or less points. The Redhawks are 2-4 in those contests with two of those matchups being one-point contests.
Another Tough Task
A week after facing Ohio Valley Conference leader and #2 Jacksonville State, Southeast now goes up against the league's second-best team in UT Martin. The Skyhawks, who heated up to win four of their last five, are 6-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play. UTM leads the league and ranks 17th in the Football Championship Subdivision in scoring with 35.6 points per game. The Skyhawks also top the OVC in fourth down conversion percentage (52.9 pct.), third down conversion percentage (47.4 pct.), defensive touchdowns (6), punt returns (13.7 ypr) and turnovers gained (24). UTM is also first in the conference in sacks allowed, giving up just 1.3 per game this year.
Big "D"
Another huge performance by Southeast's defense stood out in the Redhawks 17-10 loss to #2 Jacksonville State (Nov. 5). The Redhawks limited the Gamecocks to season-lows in rushing yards (151) and total yards (350). Southeast also became the first team to shutout JSU in the second half this year, as the Gamecocks 17 points were their third-lowest of the season. Southeast's defense finished with six tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, a pair of fumble recoveries, three pass breakups, three quarterback hurries and a blocked field goal attempt in that game.
Hall Impresses in Starting Debut
In his first career start at inside linebacker, true freshman
Zach Hall recorded a game-high 10 tackles in Southeast's loss to #2 Jacksonville State (Nov. 5). Hall had four solo stops, assisted on six others and added 1.5 tackles for loss. He became the fourth Redhawk to get 10 or more tackles in a game this season.
Penalty Plagued
Southeast's matchup with #2 Jacksonville State (Nov. 5) saw a combined 25 penalties for 214 yards. There were also six unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, two personal fouls and one player was ejected for targeting in the otherwise chippy contest. JSU has the most penalties of any team in the Ohio ValleyConference with 89 for 797 yards. The Gamecocks had 16 penalties for 138 yards against the Redhawks alone.
Wilkerson Strikes Again
Kristian Wilkerson scored Southeast's first points of the game on a 49-yard touchdown pass from
Jesse Hosket with 7:08 left to play in the third quarter against Jacksonville State (Nov. 5). Wilkerson recorded his team-high fourth touchdown reception and had two more catches of 20 or more yards. He leads the Redhawks with 561 receiving yards and 11 catches consisting of 20 or more yards. Wilkerson has caught a pass in eight of nine games this season.
Whigham Blocks Field Goal
After #2 Jacksonville State had the ball at Southeast's 27-yard line following two unsportsmanlike penalties, Cade Stinnett's 36-yard field goal attempt was blocked by
Fernando Whigham. Whigham gave the Redhawks their first blocked kick of the season. It was the first time Southeast blocked an opponent's field goal attempt since Nov. 21, 2015 (
John Popovich vs. UT Martin).
The Chase is On
Linebacker
Roper Garrett is on pace to get 100 tackles this season. Garrett presently leads the Redhawks and ranks eighth in the Ohio Valley Conference with 73 total tackles. He is 17 away from reaching 100 in a season for the second year in a row. Garrett ranks fifth all-time in career tackles (340) and tackles for loss (27.5) at Southeast. If Garrett finishes the 2016 campaign as the Redhawks leading tackler, he will become the first player in Southeast's NCAA Division I era to lead the team in tackles three-straight seasons.
Did You Say 9,000?
Alex Knight, who leads the Ohio Valley Conference and ranks fifth in the nation with 44.3 yards per punt, is coming up on 9,000 punting yards in his career. Knight recently punted eight times for 347 yards and dropped three of his punts inside the 20-yard line against #2 Jacksonville State (Nov. 5). He now has 8,554 yards on 203 attempts. Knight ranks third all-time among Southeast's career leaders in punting attempts, punting yards and punting average (42.1 ypp). Knight was named OVC Specialist of the Week for the second time this season on Nov. 6.
Rushing Low
Southeast had zero rushing yards on 28 carries in its 17-10 loss against #2 Jacksonville State (Nov. 5). Three of the six Redhawk ball carriers had positive yardage with no run spanning more than 11 yards. It was Southeast's third-lowest rushing output during its NCAA Football Championship Subdivision era and fewest rushing yards in a game since the Redhawks had -17 at Southern Illinois on Sept. 9, 2000.
Sanders the Specialist
Cameron Sanders returned a kickoff for a touchdown for the second time in his career when he dashed 93 yards to the end zone during the third quarter against Austin Peay (Oct. 29). Sanders now has both the school's longest (99 yds) and fourth-longest kickoff returns for touchdowns. His first came with 10:10 left to play in the fourth quarter at Jacksonville State a year ago. Sanders is 13th in the Football Championship Subdivision in kick returns (27.1 ypr). He currently leads Southeast in career kickoff return average (28.30 ypr), as well.
Sanders Leads OVC in Kick Returns
Cameron Sanders leads the Ohio Valley Conference in kick return average with 27.1 yards per return through nine games this season. Sanders' 760 kick return yards are second-most in the conference behind Tennessee State's Chris Rowland (820). He is one of four OVC players to return a kickoff for a touchdown in 2016.
Scoring Streak
The Redhawks presently have the third-longest scoring streak in the Ohio Valley Conference. Southeast has scored in 64-consecutive games and ranks behind Murray State (131) and UT Martin (78) in that category. The last time the Redhawks went scoreless in a game was at Purdue (59-0) on Sept. 17, 2011.
49 in a Row
Southeast kicker
Ryan McCrum has made 49-consecutive extra points. McCrum did not miss a PAT all of last season going a perfect 29-of-29. He is 20-of-20 in PATs over his first eight contests this year. McCrum last missed a PAT with 3:32 left in the fourth quarter vs. Jacksonville State on Nov. 22, 2014.
FCS Top-20
Southeast enters the week ranked among the top 20 in the Football Championship Subdivision in three categories. The Redhawks are 11th in red zone defense (70 pct.), 14th in fourth down conversion percentage (68.8 pct.), 16th in time of possession (32:33 per game), fourth in kickoff returns (26.1 ypr) and 13th in net punting (38.8 ypp). Individually,
Ryan McCrum is third in field goals per game (1.6),
Cameron Sanders is fifth in combined kick returns (760 yds) and 13th in kick returns (27.1 ypr), and
Alex Knight is fifth in punting (44.3 ypp).
Red Zone Defense
The Redhawks lead the Ohio Valley Conference and rank 11th in the nation in red zone defense. Opponents have scored on 70 percent (21-of-30) of their chances against Southeast in the red zone this season. The Redhawks have forced three turnovers in the red zone, as well. Southeast was seventh in the OVC in that category a year ago.
Time of Possession
Southeast ranks second in the Ohio Valley Conference and ranks 16th in the nation in time of possession. The Redhawks are averaging 32:33 per game in time of possession this season.
