Volleyball Sweep of TTU Closes Season

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri volleyball defeated Tennessee Tech (7-21 (3-12 OVC) in straight sets sets (25-15, 25-16, 25-16) Saturday afternoon at Houck Field House.

Prior to the contest, seniors Jade Mortimer, Katarina Rotta and Madalyn Werths were honored by coaches and fans.

Southeast charged out of the gates towards a 25-15 opening set victory behind strong attack led by Jessica McElderry (five kills, .833 hitting clip) and Nzingha Clarke (four kills, .667 attack percentage). SEMO hit match best .387 during the frame.

The Redhawks momentum continued throughout the contest, cruising to 25-16 wins in the next two games and eventually sweeping the Golden Eagles.

Clarke led Southeast's wide spread attack with a match-best 11 kills, sporting a .611 hitting clip and adding three block assists. Krista Berns, Krissa Gearring and McElderry all tallied eight kills as the Redhawks posted a season best .350 success rate (43 kills, eight errors, 100 attempts).

"I'm proud of the way our team handled this emotional match today," commented head coach Julie Yankus. "Although we didn't want our season to end today, I'm happy that we were able to end the season with three wins in a row. We really focused on playing for the seniors this week and I believe the whole team played for them today."

Rotta finished her career at SEMO by earning her eighth double-double of the year. Her 29 assists and 10 digs were accompanied by four kills, three aces and a .500 attack percentage. Mortimer ended the match with six digs, three assists, one ace and zero receiving errors.

"We have an amazing senior class that had represented this program with pride and class," continued Yankus. " These three seniors have been the backbone of this program for the last few years. Kat, Jade and Maddie are three remarkable young women who I am proud to have coached. They have left a lasting impression on this program."

The Redhawks end the 2016 season at 7-23 with a 6-10 OVC record.
