Redhawks Fall to UT Martin, 24-10

MARTIN, Tenn. -- Southeast Missouri (3-7, 3-4 OVC) suffered a 24-10 road loss at UT Martin (7-4, 6-1 OVC) Saturday.

"It's certainly a disappointing loss," said SEMO head coach Tom Matukewicz. "It's tough to win on the road, and we didn't play well enough to win. Hats off to UT Martin. They'll have a big game next week when they take on Jacksonville State for the Ohio Valley Conference title. I expect it'll be a low scoring game because both defenses are really good as they both kept us out of the end zone for the most part."

UTM opened the scoring with a 33-yard field goal by Brett Arkelian late in the first quarter. Ladevin Fair anchored the scoring drive with 29 yards rushing on five carries, including rushes of 11 and 12 yards, respectively.

SEMO would take a 7-3 lead with 4:06 remaining in the second quarter. After a 12-yard punt gave Southeast the ball at its own 43, Jesse Hosket completed his first pass to Kristian Wilkerson down the seam for 28 yards. Wilkerson made an acrobatic one-handed catch on the play. Will Young then ran ball four consecutive plays for 28 yards down to the 1-yard line before Hosket finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run.

UTM responded by scoring the next 21 points.

SEMO had a chance to tie the game before halftime, but two false starts forced a 52-yard field goal attempt by Ryan McCrum, which sailed wide right. The Skyhawks headed into the locker room with a 10-7 lead.

UTM controlled the second half, outscoring the Redhawks 14-3.

Following a Hosket interception at the Skyhawks 24-yard line, UTM turned in a quick three-play 56-yard scoring drive to extend its lead to 10. Cook found Ben Axline for 43 yards down to the SEMO 13. Two plays later, Bowe scored.

UTM added to its lead early in the fourth quarter, using only 50 seconds to go 59 yards on three plays. Cook connected on a 56-yard completion downfield to Londell Lee widening the Skyhawks lead to 24-7.

McCrum hit his 15th field goal of the season with 5:15 remaining in the fourth to close out the scoring in the game.

Offensively, UTM outgained SEMO, 373-331.

Hosket recorded his seventh game of 200 or more passing yards, finishing with 203 yards on 13-of-39 passes. He also threw two interceptions.

Tremane McCullough (69) and Young (61) each rushed for over 60 yards in the contest.

Kristian Wilkerson led the receiving corps with four catches for 131 yards. Wilkerson secured his second 100-yard game of the season as all four of his receptions covered 20 or more yards.

Defensively, SEMO recorded seven tackles for loss and five pass breakups.

Fernando Whigham had a big game on defense tallying a career-best three tackles for loss to go along with five total stops and a pair of quarterback hurries.

Ryan Moore (8), JJ Flye (7) and Chad Meredith (7) were the Redhawks top tacklers.

SEMO returns to Cape Girardeau to end its season when it hosts Tennessee State on Nov. 19. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m., CT, at Houck Stadium.
