Tom Matukewicz beating Tennessee State, 28-21, on Oct. 4, 2014 and falling to Eastern Kentucky, 27-10, on Oct. 17, 2015. This year marks only the second time Southeast plays its Homecoming game in November. The last time the Redhawks played a Homecoming game this late was on Nov. 6, 1993 (L, 35-21, vs. Eastern Kentucky).
Series History
Southeast and Jacksonville State hook up for the 21st time in 2016. JSU owns a 15-5 lead in the all-time series between these teams. The Gamecocks are on an eight-game winning streak in the series and haven't lost to the Redhawks since 2007. Four of Southeast's five wins in the series have come at Houck Stadium.
Brickyard Game
The Redhawks face their second ranked opponent this season when #2 Jacksonville State visits Houck Stadium. Southeast has a total of six wins against ranked Football Championship Subdivision foes. Three of those victories have come under head coach
Tom Matukewicz. The Redhawks upended then-#13 Eastern Illinois, 21-14, in its other matchup with a ranked team this year back on Oct. 1. Matukewicz's other wins over ranked FCS opponents involved #3 Southeastern Louisiana (24-23) and #20 Tennessee State (28-21) in 2014.
Tall Order Ahead
National Football Championship Subdivision runner-up Jacksonville State has won 21-straight Ohio Valley Conference games. The last time the Gamecocks lost an OVC tilt was Nov. 16, 2013 (52-14, at Eastern Illinois). JSU head coach John Grass is a perfect 20-0 in league play.
The Defense Rests
Jacksonville State and Southeast boast the top two scoring defenses in the Ohio Valley Conference this season. JSU is allowing just 18.4 points per game, while the Redhawks are giving up 24.4 points per contest.
Another 100-Yard Game
Will Young ran for a career-high 154 yards and a touchdown in Southeast's 41-21 win over Austin Peay (Oct. 29). A native of Wichita, Kansas, Young averaged 9.6 yards per carry on 16 attempts. He scored his team-high fourth rushing touchdown of the season on a 7-yard run with 1:52 remaining in the third quarter. Young's 154 rushing yards are third-most in the Ohio Valley Conference this season as he ranks fourth in the league with 81.5 yards per game. Young also leads the OVC with four 100-yard rushing games this year.
Hosket and Sanders Claim OVC Weekly Honors
Southeast quarterback
Jesse Hosket and return specialist
Cameron Sanders earned adidas® Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week awards on Oct. 30. Hosket was named Co-Newcomer of the Week and Sanders secured Co-Specialist accolades. Hosket, a transfer from East Central Community College, was near perfect in completing 20-of-24 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown in Southeast's 41-21 victory over Austin Peay. The touchdown pass, his 10th of the season, came in the first quarter and gave the Redhawks a 10-0 advantage. Hosket reached the 200-yard passing plateau for the sixth time in his last seven starts. He currently ranks 29thnationally in total passing yards (1,794). Sanders returned a third quarter kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown against the Governors. The return came after APSU had trimmed the margin to just 10 points. He is the third OVC player to return a kickoff for a touchdown this season. It marked Sanders second career kickoff touchdown and he now holds the longest and fourth-longest kickoff returns for scores in school history. Sanders currently ranks 15th nationally in kickoff returns (26.6 yards/return). Murray State quarterback KD Humphries (Offensive), UT Martin linebacker James Gilleylen (Defensive), Jacksonville State kicker Cade Stinnett (Co-Specialist) and Jacksonville State safety Marlon Bridges (Co-Newcomer) rounded out this week's honorees.
Closing In
Jesse Hosket, who ranks third in the Ohio Valley Conference in passing average (224.2 ypg), needs 206 more yards to reach 2,000 this year. Hosket has completed 142-of-254 passes (55.9 pct.) for 1,794 yards and 10 touchdowns in eight starts. He has thrown a league-low two interceptions, as well. Hosket is on his way to becoming the second Southeast quarterback to throw for 2,000 or more yards in a season in three years. Kyle Snyder was the last when he finished with 2,582 passing yards in 2014. A total of nine players have thrown for 2,000 or more yards in a season at Southeast since 1962.
Moore Clears 100 Tackles
Southeast free safety
Ryan Moore went over 100 career tackles when he turned in seven against Austin Peay (Oct. 29). Moore now has 107 tackles in 25 games and 19 starts in his career.
Season-Highs
The Redhawks established new season-highs in points (41), rushing yards (276), yards per rush (6.1), total offense (515), yards per play (7.4) and punting average (47.0) during their win over Austin Peay (Oct. 29). Southeast's +20 margin (41-21) was its largest at home since defeating Tennessee Tech, 38-17, around the same time a year ago (Oct. 31).
Conference Wins
Southeast recorded its third Ohio Valley Conference win of the season when it beat Austin Peay, 41-21, on Oct. 29. The Redhawks matched their conference win total during each of their previous two seasons under head coach
Tom Matukewicz. Southeast currently stands tied for third in the league with Murray State as each enter the week with 3-2 marks. One more league victory would give the Redhawks their most in a season since sharing the OVC title with Jacksonville State in 2010 (7-1).
Sanders the Specialist
Cameron Sanders returned a kickoff for a touchdown for the second time in his career when he dashed 93 yards to the end zone during the third quarter against Austin Peay (Oct. 29). Sanders now has both the school's longest (99 yds) and fourth-longest kickoff returns for touchdowns. His first came with 10:10 left to play in the fourth quarter at Jacksonville State a year ago. Sanders is 15th in the Football Championship Subdivision in kick returns (26.6 ypr).
