CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -
Trey Kellum scored a career-high 23 points and Southeast Missouri (3-17) established new season-highs in field goal percentage and assists in an 84-61 win over Hannibal-LaGrange (3-12) Tuesday night at the Show Me Center.
Southeast, which snapped a six-game losing streak, shot 55.6 percent (30-of-54) from the field and had 20 assists on its 30 made field goals on the night.
"We went back to man-to-man defense and had to make some adjustments at halftime," said Southeast head coach
Rick Ray. "Hannibal-LaGrange's offense is not the easiest to guard after working on man-to-man defense in practice for one day. I think our offense led to us being more productive on defense."
The Redhawks trailed, 37-36, at halftime, but heated up to make 65.4 percent (17-of-26) of their field goals and outscore HLG, 48-24, in the game's final 20 minutes.
Eric McGill's 3-pointer put Southeast ahead, 46-45, with 16:28 remaining and the Redhawks never trailed again after that.
Tied, 48-48, following a Tim Pace 3-pointer, the Redhawks used a 16-5 run to widen their lead to double figures. McGill and
Jamaal Calvin each scored five points to key the surge which ended on McGill's 3-pointer at the 10:41 mark (64-53).
D'Avonte Garland's layup, which sliced Southeast's lead to 66-57 with 9:26 left to play, was the Trojans last basket for a span of 5:35.
The Redhawks scored 11 unanswered points during that drought with Calvin adding five more points. Kellum's dunk ended the stretch, pushing Southeast's lead to 77-57 with 4:42 on the clock.
Jaylin Stewart's 3-pointer later put the exclamation point on the Redhawks victory.
Kellum, who posted his second 20-point game this season, shot 8-of-11 from the field and 7-of-12 at the free throw line, while grabbing four rebounds in 27 minutes.
Calvin followed with a season-high 16 points and buried four 3-pointers.
Isiah Jones, who reached 100 threes in his career, scored 14 points and dished out five assists, while McGill contributed 13 points and six rebounds off the bench.
Joel Angus III turned in a game-high eight rebounds and eight assists, as well.
Southeast also turned the ball over a season-low seven times and sent HLG to the free throw line only once.
De'Shawn Terrell and Pace led the Trojans with 19 and 15 points, respectively. HLG shot just 33.3 percent (11-of-33) in the second half after making 62.5 percent (15-of-24) of its field in the opening stanza.
Southeast posted its 24th-straight win against non-Division I teams.
The Redhawks begin inner-divisional Ohio Valley Conference play at home against UT Martin Saturday. Tip-off is set for 4:15 p.m., CT.
