JACKSON, Tenn. —
Abby Klintworth scored a pair of goals in Sunday's 2-0 win over Union University (0-6).
With the win, Southeast Missouri (5-3-1) will carry a three-match winning streak into Ohio Valley Conference play which begins Friday.
The Redhawks and Bulldogs played 45 minutes of scoreless soccer in the first half of the match.
Southeast and Union tied with four shots each in the first half. Southeast had five corner kick opportunities in the half while Union had none.
The Redhawks had only one shot on goal in the opening half while the Bulldogs had two.
Much like the match against Arkansas State, starting keeper
Alyssa Sickler was replaced by
Kindra Lierz to start the second half.
The Redhawks came out of the break ready to play as the offense stepped up considerably in the second half.
Klintworth broke the scoreless tie in the 51st minute of the match.
Jennifer Antonacci fed the ball into the box off a corner kick to a leaping Klintworth who headed the ball into the lower left corner of the goal to make it 1-0 Southeast.
It was Klintworth again as she widened the lead to 2-0 in the 78th minute with her second goal of the game. Maddy Karstens fired a shot off in the box that rebounded off the keeper. Klintworth capitalized on the situation and put it in to extend the lead to 2-0 for the Redhawks.
Union had a couple good chances to score in the second half but couldn't close on the opportunities.
Southeast outshot the Bulldogs, 15-9, with 11 shots coming in the second half. Seven of the Redhawks' shots were on goal. Southeast had a season-high nine corner kicks in the match.
It was a career day for Klintworth. Her two goals, three shots, three shots on goal, and four points were all single-game career highs for the junior.
Natasha Minor also fired three shots off in the match.
Honeye Heydari led the Bulldogs with four shots, three of which were on goal.
Sickler and Lierz combined for the shutout. Sickler recorded two saves while Lierz had three in the second half. Lierz (4-3-1) earned the win in goal Sunday.
Kristen Francis (0-4) played all 90 minutes in goal for Union. Francis allowed two goals and stopped five shots on goal.
The Redhawks return home to open OVC play against SIUE and Eastern Illinois this weekend. The Redhawks shared the 2014 regular season title with SIUE. The Redhawks and Cougars kickoff at 7 p.m. Friday while Sunday's match with the Panthers is slated for a 1 p.m. start time. Both matches can be viewed for free on the OVC Digital Network.
