CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — The Southeast Missouri women's soccer team remains undefeated on the season following a 1-0 win over the Evansville Purple Aces Friday.
The Redhawks improve to 2-0-1 on the season while the Purple Aces fall to 0-3.
Each half couldn't have been more different. The Redhawks dominated in the first half, outshooting UE and maintaining solid possession. Evansville came out aggressive and ready to play hard in the second half and shut down the Redhawk offense.
"We felt very confident in the first half. Although they were a good team, I feel we were more controlling of the play," said head coach
Heather Nelson. "We expected them to come out much stronger in the second half with a response, which they did, and they forced us to grind out the last 45 minutes."
The Redhawks played in front of a home crowd of over 500 Friday evening.
Nelson remarked, "I loved the crowd tonight and I loved the international students being here because they live for the game. It was great to hear them in the crowd chanting and hearing lots of noise for our players."
The Redhawks started the game with a solid offensive showing. Southeast put up six shots to Evansville's two in the half while putting four shots on goal.
Angie Mann scored her second goal of the season in the 15th minute of the game to put the Redhawks on the board. Mann tapped it past the keeper after
Paige Luehmann sent it in. With the goal, Mann becomes the Redhawks' leading scorer on the season. It was Luehmann's second assist of the season.
"I am very excited for Angie. Her transferring to Southeast from Central Michigan, where they tired to make her a defender, and scoring goals in the last two games is a testament to her and shows the strength of her character."
Southeast would hold the 1-0 lead going into halftime.
Evansville came out in the second half and dominated the ball. The Aces put up 13 shots in the half while holding Southeast to just two. Despite putting up 13 total shots, the Aces only put three on goal in the half. Both of Southeast's shots in the second half were on goal; one each by
Jenna Collingridge and
Abby Klintworth.
The Redhawks held off the Ace attack to pick up their second win of the season with the 1-0 victory.
Natasha Minor was Southeast's shots leader with three in the game; all of which came in the first half. Mann put up two shots, both on goal, in the game.
Bronwyn Boswell and Molly Lear led the Aces with four shots.
Evansville finished with 15 shots while Southeast had eight. Evansville had seven corner kicks while the Redhawks didn't have any.
Southeast, who had 18 fouls through the first two games of the season, nearly doubled their season foul count with 16 in game. Evansville was called for eight.
"This is a Missouri Valley-Ohio Valley Conference rivalry and both teams have had quite a bit of history in the past and I think that contributed to the aggressive play this evening," Nelson added.
Kindra Lierz (2-0-1) picked up the solo shutout, the 11th of her career. Lierz played all 90 minutes and recorded three saves.
"We spent the week focusing on our goalkeepers in practice and I think that paid off immensely watching Kindra this evening."
Simone Busby (0-3) played all 90 minutes in goal for UE. Busby allowed the game winning goal and recorded five saves in the match.
The Redhawks return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. when they host Northern Colorado. Sunday's match will be Family Fun Day at Houck Stadium. The day will feature free Putt Putt in the east end zone parking lot for all fans. There will also be free Andy's Frozen Custard to the first 250 fans in attendance.
