CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Locals Blake Smith and Chris Martin will represent Southeast Missouri at the 2015 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships this week. This year's event is scheduled for June 10-13 in Eugene, Oregon.
For the third-straight year, the University of Oregon will host the NCAA Outdoor Championships with all events contested at Hayward Field.
Both Smith and Martin appear in the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the first time in their careers.
A native of nearby Jackson, Smith qualified for nationals in the long jump during the opening day of the NCAA West Region Prelims on May 28 in Austin, Texas. His mark of 7.81m (25-7 ½) was good for eighth place on a day where he also shattered Southeast's 100m dash record. Smith holds the school record in the event he competes in this week with a leap of 7.82m (25-8) in the long jump, a mark he achieved at this year's Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships. Additionally, Smith is the only Redhawk to make both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championship meets this season.
Martin, who hails from Cape Girardeau, secured a spot at nationals in the triple jump. He garnered Southeast's highest finish at this year's NCAA West Region Prelims with a fifth-place showing (15.75m, 51-8 ¼) on the final day of competition. That triple jump mark is currently the best of Martin's two-year outdoor career.
The top eight competitors in the long jump and triple jump achieve first-team All-America status, while the next eight placewinners earn second-team All-America honors. Southeast has had a total of six All-Americans since moving to the NCAA Division I level in 1991-92. Blake Carter was the Redhawks last All-American in the long jump in 2013 and Mike Roberson was the school's last All-American in the triple jump in 1988.
Smith is slated to compete in the long jump at 7:15 p.m., CT, Wednesday and Martin is scheduled to participate in the triple jump at 6:30 p.m., CT, Friday.
