CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southeast Missouri baseball team dropped game two of their weekend series with Tennessee Tech, 11-5.
With Saturday's loss, Southeast is now 30-16 on the season and 20-6 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Tennessee Tech climbs to 21-23, 12-11 OVC. Southeast's five-game winning streak, eight-game OVC winning streak, and nine-game home winning streaks were all snapped Saturday.
Tyler Brazelton led off the game with a walk and advanced to third on an error. He scored an unearned run on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Flick. Tennessee Tech led 1-0 in the opening frame.
The Redhawks plated a couple runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Ryan Rippee drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a wild throw pickoff attempt. Scott Mitchell reached on an infield hit and advanced on an error by the second baseman. Rippee scored on the play to tie the game. Branden Boggetto gave Southeast the lead with an RBI double to score Mitchell.
Brazelton homered on the first pitch of the third inning to tie the game, 2-2.
Dalton Hewitt hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third to plate Jason Blum and give the Redhawks a 3-2 lead.
Southeast extended the lead to 5-2 in the fourth inning. With two out, Trevor Ezell hit a base hit to center field to score Mitchell; Ezell advanced to second on the throw to the plate. Ezell would immediately score on a single up the middle by Blum.
From that point on, Southeast's offense was silenced while Tennessee Tech's began to fire.
Three runs in the top of the fifth by Tennessee Tech knotted the game up at five runs apiece.
Sparked by a two-run home run by Chase Chambers, Tennessee Tech put up four runs in the sixth to take a 9-5 lead on Southeast.
An RBI single by Anthony El Chibani in the seventh widened the lead to 10-5 for the Golden Eagles.
Jake Farr singled to left center to score Dylan Bosheers in the eighth inning, widening the lead to 11-5.
Southeast was shutout the final five innings of the game and were outhit 16-8 in the matchup.
Blum led the offense, going 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI while Mitchell finished 2-for-3 with two runs. Garrett Gandolfo drew four walks in the game.
Travis Hayes (7-5) suffered the loss. Hayes pitched five and a third innings, allowing five runs on nine hits. The Redhawks used four relief pitchers in the game.
Brazelton finished the day 3-for-4 with four runs scores and was on base five times. David Allen and Bosheers each had two hits.
Starter Evan Fraliex pitched only three and two-thirds innings. He gave up five runs on six hits. Reliever Travis Moths (3-2) picked up the win. Moths pitched the remaining five and a third innings, allowing just two hits and striking out nine Redhawk batters.
The rubber game of the series will be Sunday with first pitch at 1 p.m. Senior Day recognition will begin at 12:30. The Redhawks will be honoring 13 seniors prior to first pitch. The game, and Senior Day festivities, will be broadcast live on the OVC Digital Network.
