Redhawks Advance to Championship Match With 2-0 Win Over TTU

MURRAY, Ky. — The No. 6 Southeast Missouri soccer team defeated No. 2 Tennessee Tech, 2-0, in Friday's semifinal match of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. With the victory, the Redhawks advance to Sunday's OVC Tournament Championship match.

The Redhawks will face No. 1 Murray State in the Championship match on Sunday at 1 p.m.

This is the first time since 2007 the Redhawks will play in the Championship match. Southeast defeated Samford in a shootout to capture the tournament title that season.

"It feels fantastic to get this win," said head coach Heather Nelson. "It was a total team effort as we used every player in our lineup. Our defense deserves a lot of credit for shutting out the second place team in our league. To score two goals against a quality Tennessee Tech defense is also a testament to how well we came out and played today."

Jennifer Antonacci found the back of the net in the ninth minute of the match. Antonacci picked off a TTU player and fired a shot from about 10 yards out and into the back of the net, putting the Redhawks in front, 1-0.

Antonacci's early goal would stand as the first-half difference maker. Southeast outshot the Golden Eagles 5-3 in the opening half. Each team had two shots on goal in the half.

Tennessee Tech had two corner kicks while the Redhawks had one. Each team was called for five fouls.

The match remained 1-0 for much of the second half.

In the 81st minute, Natasha Minor netted her fourth goal of the season to widen the lead to 2-0 on the Golden Eagles. Minor chipped the ball over the keeper to into the back of the net.

The Redhawks were able to fend off the Golden Eagles for nine more minutes to capture the 2-0 victory and move on to the Championship match.

The Redhawks outshot the Golden Eagles 11-7 in the match with five shots on goal. Minor led the offense with four shots and two on goal.

Southeast had two corner kicks while TTU had three in the game.

Kindra Lierz (8-5-7) earned the complete game shutout in goal for Southeast. Lierz made four saves in the match en route to her eighth solo shutout of the season, 16th of her career.

OVC Defensive Player of the Year Kari Naerdemann (8-8-4) suffered the loss in goal for TTU. Naerdemann allowed both goals and made three saves in the match.

"I thought coming into this game, it was a matchup of the best keepers in the league. They were both very dominant on both ends of the field. I couldn't be more proud of how Kindra played with confidence today," Nelson added.

Sunday's match will be streamed for free to the OVC Digital Network.
