Redhawks Fall at the Buzzer to Idaho State, 65-64

EL PASO, Texas — Southeast Missouri saw their four-game winning streak snapped Friday when they fell to Idaho State. Idaho State's Isabel Vara de Rey hit a 3-point shot at the final buzzer to down the Redhawks, 65-64, in game one of the UTEP Thanksgiving Classic.

Southeast suffers its second loss of the season and is now 4-2 while Idaho State picks up only its second win and is now 2-3.

For the fifth game this season, Southeast featured three or more players in double-figure points.  Imani Johnson led the Redhawks with 15 points and eight rebounds, both a career high for the redshirt-freshman.

The Redhawks ended the first quarter on top of Idaho State, 22-15, their largest lead of the game to that point.

Johnson led the Redhawks in the period with eight points and five rebounds.

ISU battled to cut the Redhawk lead to one, 24-23, in the second quarter with 6:28 to play but Southeast was able to fend off the Bengals and regain a seven-point lead with 2:03 to play on a 3-pointer by Erin Bollmann, 32-25.

Southeast finished the first half with a slim four-point lead on the Bengals, 34-30.

At halftime, Johnson had already recorded her second career double-digit game with 10 points. Johnson also led the Redhawks with seven rebounds in the half, already a new career-high. Johnson's first-half stat line was recorded in only seven minutes off the bench.

Olivia Hackmann and Bollmann each had seven points for Southeast going into halftime.

Idaho State took advantage of six Redhawk turnovers, scoring eight points off turnovers in the first half.

A big third quarter for the Bengals helped bring them back into the game. Down 43-40 with 4:20 to play, ISU went on a 10-point run to finish the quarter on top, 50-43.

Southeast was outscored heavily in the third period, 20-9.

The Bengals found their largest lead of the game of 10 points just 1:48 into the final quarter, 56-46.

The Redhawks immediately put up 11 unanswered points to retake a 57-56 lead with five minutes to play. The run was capped by a good 3-pointer by Ashton Luttrull

With one minute to play, the Redhawks were up by four, 64-60. A layup by Vara de Rey narrowed the lead to 64-62 with 50 seconds to play.

With only one team foul in the fourth quarter, the Redhawks used their second, third, and fourth team fouls to help run out the clock.

After the Redhawks used their fourth foul, there was just 12 seconds left on the clock. With the clock nearing zeroes, Lindsey Brown found an open Vara de Rey on the perimeter who shot the open 3-pointer and found the bottom of the net to down the Redhawks by one, 65-64.

Bollmann finished the game behind Johnson with 14 points and six rebounds while Hackmann tallied 11 points in her sixth double-figure game of the season. Hackmann also picked up a season-high three blocks in the game.

The Redhawks' season assist leader, Adrianna Murphy picked up six more in Friday's game. Murphy also had six boards in the game.

The Redhawks struggled from the free-throw line, shooting a season-low 56.5% (13-of-23) from the charity stripe.

The Redhawks will play their second game of the UTEP Thanksgiving Tournament Saturday at 5:35 p.m., CT, against UC Riverside.
