Volleyball Topped By UT Martin, 3-0

MARTIN, Tenn. – Southeast Missouri (10-18, 6-9 OVC) fell to UT Martin (9-23, 5-10 OVC) in three sets Tuesday evening at the Skyhawk Fieldhouse (14-25,17-25, 23-25).

After a quick start by the Skyhawks, the Redhawks were unable to build momentum in the opening set. Southeast fell 25-14, giving UTM an early match lead, 1-0.

As the Redhawks began to gather momentum in the second set, the Skyhawks quickly tallied five-straight points to take a 12-6 advantage. Southeast continued to battle, eventually pulling within three at 17-14. The Skyhawks were able to string together another rally, creating the distance needed to take the second set, 25-17.

Southeast took an early lead in the third frame only to be answered by two five-point Skyhawk rallies. Trailing 21-12, the Redhawks began to chip away at the lead. Several kills by Taylor Masterson and Madeline Grimm along with stellar defense allowed Southeast to reduce UTM's lead to one, 23-22. After a time out, Jessica McElderry tacked on another kill for seven-straight Redhawk points to force a tie at 23. Able to regain control, UTM cut Southeast's comeback short to take the set, 25-23, and complete the sweep of Southeast.

Madalyn Werths led the Redhawks with nine kills in the match, followed by Masterson's eight. Marie Less led defensively, earning 15 of Southeast's 43 total digs.

Southeast will return home to close out the regular season with a matchup against Jacksonville State on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. The Redhawks will honor two senior student-athletes prior to the match.
