Carpenter breaks Southeast's single-season record with a .424 batting average

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri (11-34, 3-20) sent seniors Alexis Anderson, Kelsey Gass and Renee Terry out with a 5-3 victory over Murray State (30-22, 16-9) Sunday afternoon in its season finale at the Southeast Softball Complex.

Leah Duffe went 3-for-4 with two doubles and Savannah Carpenter added two hits, while Aubrey Denno gave the Redhawks a strong pitching performance.

Carpenter finished the year with a Southeast single-season record .424 batting average. She surpassed Kim Palmer's .413 clip in 1998. Additionally, the Redhawks completed back-to-back seasons with a .400 hitter for the first time since 1998 (Palmer) and 1999 (Jenny Oermann).

Southeast pounded out 10 hits and used a four-run third inning to take down the Racers.

Lindsey Patterson led off with a single to center, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored when Carpenter delivered a base hit down the left field line. Duffe followed with a single and pinch-runner KC Saxe scored. Two errors figured into the Redhawks other runs as Haylee Krack and Duffe touched home to give Southeast a 4-0 lead.

After MSU scored its first run of the game in the top of the sixth, Southeast countered with a solo home run by Jamie Woodworth in the bottom half of that inning. Woodworth's second homer sailed over the left field wall, pushing the Redhawks lead to 5-1.

The Racers threatened with two outs in the top of the seventh when Erica Howard doubled home Casey Castile and Taylor Odom to slice Southeast's lead to 5-3. Hannah Durham relieved Denno and forced Shelbey Miller to fly out to left field, nailing down the win. Durham picked up her team-high third save of the season.

Denno (5-8) worked 6.2 innings, allowing six hits and three runs. She also struck out two and walked none. Denno led the team with five wins as a true freshman this year.

CheyAnne Gaskey (13-12) suffered the loss. Gaskey gave up four runs on six hits, struck out two and walked one in 2.1 innings.

Offensively, Chelsea Smith joined Carpenter and Duffe with multiple-hits. Smith went 2-for-4. Patterson, Woodworth and Gass added one hit apiece, as well.

Southeast snapped a 16-game losing streak in OVC play on its final day of the 2014 season.
