EMPORIA, Kan. – Despite a weather delay of nearly two hours, the Southeast Missouri track and field team took advantage of the Sam Williams Twilight Qualifier Saturday in Emporia, Kansas.
It was the first time back in competition after winning the Ohio Valley Conference Championship last weekend for the Redhawks and sent a very limited squad to the meet to work on making gains in the NCAA West Region.
Prenecia Ponds and Ayonna Cartwright each got personal-best times in the 100-meter dash, finishing first and second, respectively. Ponds crossed the finish line in 11.84 seconds while Cartwright received the silver medal in 11.98 seconds.
Ponds capped her day with a first place finish in the 200-meter dash, beating the competition in a time of 24.67 seconds.
Jessica Brown took advantage of the meet, jumping into the top-48 in the NCAA West Region with an outdoor best of 6.01 meters. The jump also gave Brown a first place finish in the event.
"It was good to see Jessica get that jump off and probably get into the region meet," Southeast head coach Eric Crumpecker said. "Prenecia and Ayonna each ran PR's, and we have been trying to get Ayonna under 12 seconds. That was really good to see."
On the men's side of the long jump, Blake Carter also took advantage of the situation with a season best jump of 7.58 meters to claim the gold medal. Carter's jump also places him in a tie for the 21st-best jump in the region.
Chris Martin, the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year, placed second overall and was the top-collegiate finisher in the triple jump. Martin had a jump of 15.81 meters for the silver medal.
In the hammer throw, Seth Sievers claimed a second place finish with a toss of 54.67 meters while teammate Shon Kyle placed fifth with a toss of 53.50 meters.
Kyle had the top collegiate finish in the shot put and finished third overall. Kyle's toss of 16.7 meters was good enough for the bronze medal and was the only collegiate finisher in the top four.
Christian Locke placed second collegiately, fourth overall, in the pole vault. Locke cleared 4.71 meters in the event.
"The people that needed to do something, did it," Crumpecker said. "Hopefully we can take some more people next weekend and get a few more qualified for the region meet."
Southeast jumps coach Matt Koelling is an alumnus of Emporia State University and took advantage of the Redhawks competing at the meet by competing unattached in the triple jump. Koelling finished fourth overall with a jump of 14.78 meters.
The Redhawks will again send a limited squad to two separate meets. Part of the squad will attend the Louisville Twilight on Friday in Louisville, Kentucky, while another portion of the squad will attend the Georgia Tech Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Atlanta, Georgia.
