CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri cross country teams return to action Saturday at the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic. The meet will be held at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky.
The Redhawks will compete in the Gold races Saturday. The Men's Gold race will begin at 8:30 a.m., CT, followed by the Women's Gold at 9:15 a.m., CT.
"While we have not rested for this meet at all, we are taking this race seriously for the first time this season," said head coach Ryan Lane. "There will be about 130 teams racing and our goal is to be in the top 20 on each side. A top-20 finish would put us in the top third of Division I teams."
It's been two weeks since the Redhawks have seen competition at the Saluki Invitational in Carbondale, Illinois. The Redhawks used the Saluki Invitational to build on their team performance in preparation for Louisville.
Shane Brown was once again the top finisher for the men as he finished ninth. Angela Sumner paced the women with a fifth-place finish.
"Angie is going to be our athlete to watch out for Saturday. I expect her to make a big statement this weekend."
A number of other Ohio Valley Conference schools will also be competing in Louisville Saturday including Belmont, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Morehead State, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech, and UT Martin.
"Most importantly, five of the top 16 in our conference will be at this meet and we want to place well amongst them," Lane concluded.
